are nightmares normal for dogs to have??? and if so what causes them??? maverick has atleast 3 a week. should this be something to worry about. he is a heavy sleeper and never wakes up during them. we pet him to help calm him. is there anything else we can do??

My dogs have dreams too,if they seem upset during a dream,I do wake them up.I think they all dream, this is pretty normal.Talk to your vet about it.Hanley

If he's just whining, he could be dreaming that he's being kept from chasing a nice kitty or something. If he's really wailing, I'd be more concerned about his general stress level.

I wouldn't touch a dreaming dog -- you can speak softly to him until his eyes open if you feel bad about whatever he might be suffering. You shouldn't risk a reflexive bite by touching him, though.

Sometimes Elvis is dreaming so deep it actually looks as if he is fitting, you can see him eyes rolling and we have to pick him up for him to come round then he just walks off and sleeps somewhere else as if to say did you have to disturb me!

Greta jumps!!

I think it's pretty normal for dogs to dream, and even nightmare! Greta's eyes move all around, and her legs jerk as if she's running or jumping. She randomly will jerk really hard! It's kind of funny! She will usually calm down after a few minutes. I think it's actually a good sign that they are in deep doggie sleep!
