Good Morning fellow Boxer owners,
I just yesterday brought home Mugsey,my girlfriends eight year old Boxer. After I picked him up at Jenny's apt,Mugsey went straight to the vet.He is in good health just a skin irritation and
a couple of benign cysts that will be removed next week.I had an Irish Setter female for 17 yrs in New Jersey.Moved to TX.in 94 and this is my first fulltime dog in sometime. As I was preparing his food yestedat I was flooded with so many memories of my former pet, saying goodbye was the hardest thing I ever had to do.My concern with Mugsey is that I live about 30 mileswest of downtown Houston were I work and he will be alone for about 9.5 hrs a day
This is his first day at my place alone and I am stressing out big time.Jenny his former owner worked fulltime also and was left alone too.But with his new surroundings I am concerned.I agreed
to take him or else it was the pound.I could not live with that.Any replies would be greatly appreciatedsmashicon

Welcome to you! And congrats to you for rescuing a senior baby :D Is Mugsey crate trained? If not did you give him run of the house or is he restricted to one room? It will probably take him a few days to get used to his new surroundings so you might come home to some accidents or some couch fluff :p Or he just might be really laid back and knows he is in a better place so he is snoozing on the couch :p

Kudos to you for keeping a senior citizen out of the pound! (I'll be kind and not say what I'm thinking about someone who could turn a loyal 8 year old boxer baby into the pound! smashicon)

I lost both my 14 year old chihuahua and our rescued 12 year old white shepherd this past summer. :( I know how hard it is to lose these furry little guys, esp. when they're such a part of your family. The time to say good-bye always comes much too soon, so just make the time you have the best it can be! Lots of love, good food, walks in the park, snuggling on the couch...

It's hard to watch our furkids age and slow down, but seniors have so much love and appreciation to give - they're wise in the ways of the world and know the value of just being around their family.

Sounds like Mugsey has found a guardian angel to watch over him! Come back often and keep us posted on how he's doing. And put up some pictures of the handsome fellow! :D

Thanks for your reply myrocky.Mugsey has been out to my place several times. However this will be his home form now on.He is given the run of the Living room Dining room and kitchen.I left dry food out and some water and left him laying on the couch. He is on some antibiotics for his skin and likes to sleep alot.I can only hope he is resting on the couch.Again thanks.

Since Mugsey is familiar with the surroundings, I'm sure he'll be just fine. What a wonderful person you are for taking him. My little girl Lacey will be 9 this spring...I can't imagine having to give her up. Your girlfriend must feel awful. Lets us know how things work out.

Barb :)

God Bless you all for your replies:
I know in my heart I did the right thing. But my girlfriend has a two year old bay girl, works fulltime and is starting real estate school soon. She cried as we drove away but like I told her she can she him any time.Mugsey is so playful and strong for his age
and very affectionate too.Again thanks for your compassion.

gotta love it

Gotta love an older dog. They are just so cool.
I would think if your girlfriend worked all day, then Mugsey is probably used to having his quiet time during the day. One suggestion(if he doesn't need to be crated) is that maybe you could make a doggie door that went outside, directly into a small(depending on your resources), secure kennel/potty area. It is possible that some dogs with age, tend to be able to hold it less longer as time passes.

Thanks Mary and Maggie
It went pretty well Mugsey was so happy when I got home.No accidents either.I had left some dry food out for him but he did not eat until I got home. The first day of leaving him alone was the hardest. We hung out and ate and watch T.V.he is so sweet
I cannot remember wanting to stay home as much as I want to do now.He is so good we are going to be the best of friends.Musgey is on some antibiotics and arthritis medication it seems to make him kind of sleepy.Next week he has to go back to the vet to have some cysts removed one on his side and one on his back.I know that he is older but he is so loveable our days together may not be many but I will give him the best that I have.
God Bless.Ed.
