My jeep story (a bit long)
I do love my 2000 Wrangler Sport, but I actually don't find it to be a very good dog car. Last year Laila actually jumped out of the side of the jeep when the top was down with her leash on, so she was dangling from the side of the car with only her back feet on the ground- horrifying! (car not moving- thank God!) and she always likes to stand up on the wheel wells in the back. Laila also really hates jumping up into the jeep and usually tries to make me pick her up and put her in. (but she has no trouble jumping over a 5' fence- go figure) Of course, a harness and seat belt are big helps. I am thinking about getting a station wagon (VW Passat) where I can put her in the back behind the back seat with a gate type enclosure? I'm having a hard time making the switch from a Wrangler (super fun) to a station wagon FOR MY DOG!!! That's a sacrifice! I don't even HAVE kids- only one fur baby. The other benefit to having her in the back is keeping the front of the car clean. My jeep has dog hair in places you can't imagine. It is in every crevise- imagine if Boxers shed like Labs- it would be even worse.
I am having a difficult time with the station wagon thing- I feel like it will age me 10 years instantly. HAHAHA. It's difficult to make the sacrifice, but Laila is in the car with me everyday for over an hour, so it is a big factor in my next car purchase. I've also had my fair share of mechanical problems with the Wrangler, but we don't buy that car for it's reliability ratings, do we? I do still love my Wrangler, though and wish I could have it as a third car- maybe later in life?? Oh well, there's definitely nothing like it- enjoy and make sure your dogs are well fastened into the car!
