Thank you so much for this info and website. I tried to search it the other night, but the site was down. But I looked at it today and I was amazed at the stuff....bad stuff that is in dog food. I noticed that beets are added to Iam's food...which is a controversary food for dogs, plus it causes stomach problems. Gee....I wonder if the beets are the culprit?

Update: Since we have changed food 4 days ago, Lexi has been back to her old self appicon. I just want to make sure this continues for weeks to come. We now will find a new food, other than the perscription diet....thanks to all of you. Thank you so very much.

Woohoo! fiestaicon SO glad she's feeling better!

As for the Iams food, I wouldn't necessarily point the finger at beet pulp to have caused Lexi's illness. It's definitely not a great ingredient, but not necessarily the culprit. I know that Iams has been involved in several food recalls so it really ANY of the ingredients could just happen to be "tainted" with something else that is making pets sick. At least you have discovered that the Iams food was the problem and that's been taken care of now.

I just wanted to comment on the Royal Canin. Usually the doctor suggests this for dogs with allergies. I'm not sure your dog has allergies, especially since Iams is a poor quality food and anything in it could have been making her sick. There are so many food choices out there also made for dogs with allergies that are much much cheaper. Not only does Royal Canin use by products in some of their foods, but they also do not make meat their first ingredient. At $80 or more for a big bag shouldn't they be using they best ingredients possible? If I were you I would try one of the non allergy formulas in the good brands already mentioned on here, and then if she still gets sick start eliminating ingredients to find what she is allergic to. I work in a vet's office and Royal Canin makes us a lot of money, so it only makes sense your doctor would suggest it. In my opinion it is just way overpriced. Natural balance makes venison, duck, bison, and some other allergy formulas that are half the price and use basically the same ingredients, so I just don't know how Royal Canin justifies their high prices. Of course you should do whatever you think is best for your dog, but that's just my opinion.

Wellness Core

My dog went from Publix brand to Iams (did not gain any weight while on Iams) to Nutro to Wellness Just for Puppies and was having one problem or another depending on the food. I started her on Wellness Core months ago and couldn't be happier. It really has been very good for her. She loves it...licks the bowl and looks up at me for more. Her energy level is to the roof. Every dog is unique,so you have to find what's right for your baby but Wellness Core has really worked for Roxy which is why I would recommend it. Best of luck in your food search! =]

Well, we ended up putting both of our boxers on Wellness and they both love it and are doing great!! Lexi acts like she has more energy than she has had in ages. Yeh, it costs a little more than Iams, but we are just so glad that Lexi is acting better that we don't care.

I am just shocked regarding that Iams is such a low quality food. I am totally shocked..Iams sure did do a good job w/ advertising and promoting it's product. I got suckered right in. I never knew about the different quality of dog foods. And our vet never told us about this either, which irritates me. Gee...I'd like to get this out to people. People like me. LOL
How would you do that??

Anyway...thanks so much for all of your help. Again, I love Boxerworld!!

Don't be upset with your vet, chances are THEY don't even know as they are a doctor not a nutritionist. We don't expect human doctors to know about different foods, we go to a nutritionist for that, it's no different with your vet.

On getting the word out talk to as many folks as you can post on message boards, etc. One person at a time you know. And I try to start small with people, convert them to something like Chicken Soup or Kirkland brand which aren't too expensive but are better than Dog Chow, Iams, etc. On price Iams and Eukanuba are expensive, you feed less of Wellness and others so the cost usually isn't much more. But bottom line talk to folks, bring it up, family, friends, heck I've stopped people in Costco who had the Beneful bag or the Pedigree bag which was MORE expensive than the Kirkland brand, explained the ingredients of each to them and showed them that they could get a BETTER quality food for a whole lot less if they went with the kirkland brand and then gave them the DFA site on a piece of paper and let them know that if they could afford better to go on there and look and they could choose a better food. Kirkland isn't the best out there, but it's leaps and bounds better than Pedigree or Beneful, so it's one small step. Don't be shy ;-).

I am so glad you switched to a better food, and she's doing better. I managed to get my boss to switch her cats food from Deli Cat (ouch) to Wellness and the dog food from Iam's, Pro Plan to TOTW, or Diamond, and Nutro. I know Diamond and Nutro aren't the best, but it's a big improvement. She got tired of the cats shedding and throwing up all the time, and she knew I fed Tyson a premium food. She broke down and asked me what to get. I just wish she'd done it years ago!!
