Ya know, EVERYONE I've ever known who's owned a Pontiac, has had the same problems you're having.....everyone!!! I'm not bashing Pontiac, I'm just saying RUN!!!! Honda's are very good cars; Dh has a 1999 civic with 130,000 miles on it and it's still going strong; stepson and DIL have 2003 Accord (2-door) with 95,000 miles on it and never done anything to it except oil changes and tires. I've never had experience with Toyotas, though I've heard they're great too! Good luck in your decision!

Try Saturn. My daughter is driving my original '96 Saturn with 170,000 miles. VERY reliable. I am on my second Saturn and love it!

Thanks Everyone!! So many choices and desicions to make. I've been on Edmunds.com and I'm not too impressed, I'd like something that details like a year or two down the road (which is obviously hard when we're talking about new vehicles...), but I do plan on extensively researching whatever car I do end up buying on Edmunds for all safety specs and vehicles specs.

DH is urging me to buy American, he likes the Fusion, I don't, so that's a no go there. However I do love the Edge, but 08 is only the second year of this model being made and it makes me a little nervous! But I get a discount through work, and they are offering 0% financing so that's hard to overlook, but clearly I'm looking for something that is going to LAST and be reliable. The reviews on Edmunds.com are good, the main drawback is the 60-0mph braking speed, it doesn't compare very well with the other crossover vehicles (this was for the 2007 though, I'm not sure if they have fixed it for the 2008, I have to try to dig a little deeper.). I do like the thought of a crossover because when kids enter the picture I've been thinking about how we were going to bring Havoc and Mayhem with us everywhere still .

The dealership we got DH's truck from sells Honda's as well, so I think we are going to take a drive up there on Sunday to test drive both the Accord and the Edge. We actually had a very good car buying experience with them so I'm looking forward to heading up there.

If anyone has heard anything about the Edge PLEASE let me know!!!

I love Hondas. I currently have an 03 Honda Accord and it is my 2nd one. I am sure the 3rd one will be a Honda as well. Very dependable car. I will also say friends/family own Toyotas and they are great cars too. Good luck!

Just do your reasearch and don't let anyone talk you into something you don't want. Good luck and pick out a good one!

I've never owned/driven a Honda, however my DH and I are big VW fans. Between the two of us - we've owned six of them (over the years - not all at once!). We currently own a 2000 Golf TDI and other than general maintenence, we've never had any major problems. Also, even though it's seven years old, it STILL gets 50 mpg. DH is getting tired of it and it's getting close to 100K miles, so he wants a new car. He's decided to wait for the new VW Tiguan to hit the US - so that will be #7 Good luck in your search for your new, reliable ride!

Getting tired of it is a good reason to get a new car but the 100,000 miles isn't. With it being a diesel, it is just getting broke in and your mpg may end up getting a little better, plus they have the 12 year corrosion warranty for body issues. My car is getting around 44-47 MPG right now and it has 138,000 miles on it, of course being a Jetta, it is a little bigger than a Golf. Not to mention, a TDI holds value really well because of the fuel mileage and the gas prices. If you do trade the Golf in, keep that in mind. You would probably be better off to sell it privately. TDI is the way to go.
Over the years, my family has owned many VWs, in fact my Dad just bought another one last week that has 180,000 mile on it to replace his that was totaled in an accident. The one that was totaled had 230,000 miles on it and ran like it was new. How the accident took place, I firmly believe that my Dad would have been killed if he would have been in most other vehicles. VW seats are set in a little fiurther from the doors so that in a side impact, you are safer.

On the other hand, I have a '99 Saturn and have had so many repairs...had to replace engine, alternator, and most recently the transmission.

I can say I will not be looking at Saturns for my next vehicle.

I have to say I agree. We also have a Saturn, a SC2. It looks nice and when it wants to, it runs great but we have put so much money into it, it isn't even worth it. New engine which was hard to find because it is so common for them to blow, and a bunch of small stupid things. It seems as though there is always something wrong with it. Parts are hard to find, Stephen hit a deer last year and we had a rental car for almost 2 weeks because they couldn't find a hood for it. When something goes wrong, parts are so expensive, right now it needs a new wheel bearing which will be $137! For any other car, it would be much cheaper. This is definately the last saturn for us too.

We would definitely sell it privately as I'm sure the VW dealer would give us next to nothing on a trade in. DH would really love to wait for the Tiguan TDI - but that's over a year away He's just tired of sitting on the ground and our family has outgrown it too. It's not the "family" car anymore because of it's size. I wish he'd get a Pasast wagon or something :D

1. buy used.. honda toyota nissan / off lease program car-( rental returns) the ford Taurus I know I know I drive one for work (2005) I am on my second one and it has 120,000 miles on it. one battery was the only problem.

The new Taurus (relabled ford 500) is a very nice car. several guys I work with drive them, and have not had major issues with them. 1 has 2006 has 80,000 on it already.
If you buy used you can get a better deal (lots less moneys) and good selection.

2. Honda best buy higher resale... very reliable easy to maintain But you must follow the required service intervals. (that is with any car)

3. toyota and nissan both have very good cars. depends on what you like.

4. How do I know? 20+ yrs being an auto truck mechanic.

5. I prefer SUV /trucks.. just a preference. I drive a car because my company provides it for free.

I came home with an 07 Edge last night . This car (crossover) rocks!! I can't stop looking at it, and the drive is fantastic, smoother and quieter than my old car, and the safety features in it are best in class. I was a little nervous because it's the first year they are making the car, but when I took it out for a test drive that was the end of it. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for reliablity!!
