New Boxer pup for X-mas

Bought a Boxer Pup as a gift to our kids 6 and 4, so far she pooped once and peed twice in the house.. No mistakes as of yet in her crate but I do find myself taking her out just about every hr and a half. She's yet to eat a full cup of food yet during feeding time. last night she cried and howled for the better part of the night so I found myself outside in 25 degree weather at 2:00 am 6:00 am and 8:00 am.. and each time either she pooped or peed outside. Is this a good thing?? and can the crying be because of her having to relieve herself or just because she's lonley and how often should I be giving her water?? should I leave the water bowel there all day?? how often should I crate her and when.??? And how difficult is it to train a dog when there are two kids in the house constantly playing with her??

a good measure of how long a pup can hold its bowels is their age in months plus one.. so your girl at 10weeks at most should be able to hold it 3.5 hrs, so she sounds right on time. Also, its always been a rule of thumb for us w/ pups to take them out and show them where to go everytime they wake up, are done playing, or have finished eating. puppies take awhile to get used to crates, almost all will cry and cry for atleast the first few nights.. you just have to stick w/ it. (where is the crate in your house? if it isn't already in your room, i'd say move it there.. near your bed, that way the pup doesn't feel so alone at nite.) i don't have kids, but i would imagine its like having another baby in the house. (maybe others can help you out there) good luck! just remember, new pups need TONS of patience and attention (esp. boxer puppies :rolleyes: )

I hope you got this pup for you & the kids,cause they are alot of hard work at this age & you must be ready to endure!Its like bringing a new baby home, there will be no rest until you all get settled, this pup is a baby,this is all new to her,so you have to treat her like one & she needs water down always!She is too exicited for a full cup of food, at 1 time right now,offer her small amounts of food 3 or 4 times a day & try to get her on a schedule,after feeding take her outside, so she can poop. She needs to go out about every hour or after drinking water, cause when it goes in, it must come out, just like a baby. Congrats on Maya, she will give you more love than you can imagine!

Your children need to be taught when to leave the pup alone. Young puppies need a lot of sleep, like a newborn.

i don't have kids, but i would imagine its like having another baby in the house.

Having a new puppy is definitely an around the clock deal. There's lots of good information on this site on what to do, how to do it and when to do it. One thing I wanted to add is, enjoy these moments while you have them. When we got Titus, he slept alot of the time. He'd bury his head under my arm and just snuggle in for long naps. I really miss those times. He's only over a year old now, but he's much bigger and likes to play or chew on his bones most of the time. Of course he still likes to cuddle, but not as much as I want to cuddle him There's nothing like gathering your puppy in your arms and having him or her snuggle up to you, giving you complete love and trust. Take time to do that. Hope all goes well.

New Puppy=New Baby

Yes, in my experience I think she is crying because she is lonely, my baby is 13 mths old and some nights he still cries(hardly ever, but sometimes). Eventally she will get it and sleep through out the night. As far as crating, we crate him at night and when both of us are not home. We learned that lesson about 2 mths ago, when he ate our leather couch. Good Luck with your little one.

She's an infant, and dogs are not meant to sleep alone. Until you got her, she likely slept curled up with her siblings and mom -- if she's in a crate overnight, keep it by your bed so she can sleep secure knowing she's not alone. In the wild, being left alone would mean she'd be doomed, so she'd scream to bring back her mother. Since mom isn't around, that means you are who needs to respond. If she's right there with you, she won't need to call out.

You probably will still need to take her out frequently, though. Keep a little log. You will find out what her "schedule" is if you jot down each nap time (when it starts/ends), playtime, meal and pee/poop. Patterns will develop that will help you anticipate when you can count on her being tired enough to sleep, how much time you have after a meal before she has to relieve herself, etc.

Having three kids age 10,6,&2 and 2 furbabies age 1 and 13 weeks I can say that the hardest part for us has been the dogs chewing on the kids toys. Of course, anything left on the floor looks like a dog toy to the dogs, so they will try to chew it! The kids are definately learning to pick up anything that they value. They have also learned how much work a dog is and how rewarding it can be. All three of my kids will not go to bed at night without giving the dogs a goodnight kiss!

Funny, we brought "Maya" to sleep upstairs because we did'nt want the Nanny who sleeps downstairs to be disturbed by her howling.. My son was totally excited about the idea of her sleeping in his room. He slept next to her crate in a sleeping bag... At 3 am she was calling to take her out and pee.. then she fell right back to sleep...I don't think my son really liked the idea of waking up at 3 am however..LOL But all in all Maya is such a joy!! We thought her the sit command today !! my kids had fun with it!!
