New Boxer or not?

My wife and I are the proud owners of Piper, a 2 year old brindle female. We have been offered an 8 month old male who is sadly left alone all day and sometimes all night by his owner (shift worker). We met the owner and the dog, and would love to give him a better home, but we are unsure of the consequences of introducing another dog into our home. Any thoughts?

If you have a female, and the new one is a male, it ought to be fine. We have a 7 yr old female and brought in a male pup who is now 5 mo. They do beautifully together. It works better is one is more dominant that the other, than them both being very dominant. Two females would definately not be a good choice. A lot of times, they end up fighting for the dominant role, and a bitch fight is not a pretty picture. But, chances are, since it is a female/male they will be great friends and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I know we did!

As long as Piper is well behaved, I think now would be the perfect time to introduce another boxer into your family. Piper will love having a playmate and a female male mix is the ideal.

I agree, male/female is the best way to go and they are both at good ages to introduce a new friend. I bet they would have a great time together and you would be giving this poor neglected guy a home with a Boxer buddy! Good luck and let us know what you decide!

Thanks for the advice

Our minds are made up, and we are going to go ahead and add to our family. Piper is well behaved, but it didn't happen overnight. With other dogs she appears to be submissive at first glance, but soon tries to gain the upper hand. I think a dominant male would be a good addition. We'll let you know how things go.

Suprise

I thought that our female would be submissive but to my suprise she became princess Zoe. Imperial contol was established and Melvin had to fall into place.LOL He didn't mind though he was just glad to have a new family.

We took Piper to meet Diesel on neutral ground last night. The meeting was not a success. Diesel is a real handful, and the two dogs did not get along. He jumped all over Piper until she bit back, a side of her we had never seen. Diesel was large and aggressive, and my wife was unable to control him on the leash. We had been optimistic, but feel that retraining such a strong and stubborn animal might not be something we could do. Poor Diesel has already had one failed adoption, and was returned to his original owner because of compatibility issues.

Is there any chance of giving it another go. Sometimes when dogs first meet, they can act quite aggressive towards each other. I remember one time when I had agreed to look after my friends Shar Pei, Princess. When Markus and Princess first met, on neutral ground, they were both quite aggressive. I thought it would never work. We took them for a long walk and by the end of the walk we were able to walk them right beside each other. They became the best of friends and were always very excited to see each other. It would be worth another try.

sounds like normal behavior for a dog that spends so much time alone. Could you or the owner take him for a good long run before the next time. Poor boy has never had any help knowing how to act.
Rex was very Leary of Cooper but after a week they are inseperable.

I agree about all of the above. As far as the exercise, it works wonders. When Zoe first met Catalina, she outright attacked Catalina. After we pulled Zoe off I immediately took her for a run along side of my bike. Zoe loves that and by the time we got home she was way too tired to act up. Much luck, I hope you try again.
