Boxer Pal
I was the last resort for a 6 month old boxer on her way to the Boxer rescue here in Tulsa Oklahoma. I already have two little dogs that live in the house. How will my boxer react to weather?? Next Question: How will she cope coming from a household with another dog, now spending the majority of the time outside alone?

Why will she be spending most of her time outside?
I assume you have a fence. Be prepared, if she gets bored, she could dig or start jumping the fence. Boxers are house dogs. You didn't know that? How will you handle the tempature extremes for the Midwest area? Summers (heat & humidity) and winters (too cold) - boxers are not suited to live outside in these conditions. I hope you seriously re-think about making her live outside. Boxers are very family/people orientated. They do not do well away from a family type setting. This is where alot of people who do not research the breed prior to getting boxers understand why they start having behavior problems with their boxer.

What were the circumstances that you received her? Why were her owner(s) going to surrendar her to Boxer Rescue? Did you get her directly from her owner? If so, they should have given you some type of information on her....ie: food brand they had been feeding, any *quirks* about her, if she gets along with other animals, etc, etc.

Boxers are indoor dogs except going out to exercise and play etc...They cannot stand heat or extreme cold either because of their short coats and muzzles....Why would she spend her time outside? You said you had 2 dogs that were indoors correct? I think it is great that you want to help her but if she is to be by herself in a yard all day and night isn't much of a life for her. She is a pup and loves attention and needs that, even when they get bigger...They just love companionship even if it is with them laying next to you while you watch TV is better than being outside alone especially if it hot or too cold...Let us know what you decide....Why was she going to rescue to begin with?

Abby- We are not that far away from eachother, about four hours I think. If you would be willing to give her up, my brother would probly take her. He is married with a four year old. He would be able to make her an inside dog. He has no other pets. He was going to get a stray boxer last week from some friends, but they ended up giving him to someone else before he had time to disscus it with his wife.
He would be a wonderful daddy to your furbaby! No pressure though, I'm worried about her being outside. We have VERY cold winters.

My Boxers go outside for five minutes and they are staring through the window, "let me in!" They are very much indoor dogs.

It looks like I have obviously made the wrong impression. I want what is best for her. She was a pup of my friends who are currently going through a divorce. They are going there seperate ways and living in apartments for the time being. I am an avid dog lover and feel that she would be better off with me than some of the people that come through the boxer rescue in Tulsa. She was brought up with a 105 lb pit bull who was a great dog, but somewhat rough when playing. My small shitzu and chihuahua would be badly injured if she got rough with them. I expected to keep her inside during the extreme weather periods. I will do what is right for her and make her as happy as possible. I appreciate the feedback.....You are changing my mind quickly. It is easy for me to say that I will keep her outside now, it is about 75 degrees outside. I couldn't live with myself keeping her outside when it is 100 degrees. As a matter of fact she is curled up with me right now in my office. Do you think that she can learn to be more gentle with smaller dogs? Has she spent too much time with a bigger more aggressive dog to change? What are your thoughts on declawing boxers?

Should you decide that you have to keep the Boxer outside, you would best find it another home. Dogs are pack animals after all, and any dog would be misreable and most likely destructive out of boredom if left alone majority of the time outside.

Declawing is cruel. I knew someone who completely declawed a cat. First off, I can't believe the vet performed the procedure and the poor thing could not even scratch herself. I was appalled. (My friend by the way took the cat from it's original jerk of an owner).

I adopted a Boxer last June, he had to learn to get along with a Chihuahua. They do not live together, but see each other often. He was quite nutty and played rough when we first brought him home, especially with my two other Boxers. He would only try to put his paw on the Chihuahua and she put him in his place rather quick. It is possible to train a Boxer to be gentle with smaller dogs.

My boxer can play rough, but he is always very gentle with puppies and small dogs. Please give her a chance, she may surprise you.

Please don't declaw, it is cruel!

I have a boxer who likes to play rough, but when we got our beagle pup he knew enough not to hurt her, they play great together! Rosie (beagle) got rougher than Eddie did! Eddiei just play bites, she would really bite him!!

Dear Abby,

It sounds like your heart is in the right place. Try letting your dogs get acquainted with the boxer after she settles into her new home. My 6-month old, 40 pound boxer puppy plays nicely with a 3-pound miniature dachshund! But unless you are comfortable with having the boxer inside and with you and the other dogs the majority of the time, no matter how good your intentions are, you should seriously consider getting in touch with one of the other posters who offered to help find a home for this dog. It's not right to expect a boxer, or any dog, to live outside most of the time no matter what the weather is like, or to be isolated from you and the other dogs when she's inside.

Thanks for joining the posting board--hope you get some helpful advice. As far as declawing a dog, I've never heard of such an absurb idea! Far better to keep the nails trimmed.
