Need Help/Information on Brain Tumors and Strokes

Thank you all for your encouragement. I know that many of you have walked in my shoes before and it's helpful to hear your words.

The good news is that Baxter is only borderline anemic. I was thankful for that news. I was also thankful to find out that Bax has only lost 2 pounds. With the wasting I thought he had lost close to 5 pounds! I need to add another meal in for him. Anyone have any great high protein ideas? I have to go easy on the carbs and sugar. The vet said as long as he is eating that I should feed him. We keep feeding the same old snacks though. Eggs, egg beaters, rye crisps with peanut butter, berries, cheese, bologna, turkey dogs, etc. Any new ideas would be welcomed!

I am not seeing a difference yet with the increase in the prednisone. We were up in the middle of the night last night to potty though so that tells me it's kicking in. He has been sleeping like a log through the night since being weaned down on the pred. I'm hopeful this is a sign that today is going to be better

Aimee, Pete thinks Baxter's treat list sounds great. Actually, it's pretty much Pete's treat list also. What about boiled chicken livers as treats? They are high in iron and both my Pete and cat Pinky love them. Even a spoon of Hills A/D might be good. It is a liver pate available at the vet's for both dogs and cats. My guys love it.

I will call the vet and find out about the A/D. Can it be baked as treats? Before Garrett died, he was on Hills K/D for his kidneys. He couldn't have any treats so we used the canned K/D and baked it into treats for him. The K/D was pretty nasty stuff though

Can Baxter have our homemade Peanut Butter Bones? No sugar but wheat flour and applesauce and lots of peanut butter. If you think he can I'll send him some...they would be high in protein but not sure about the wheat flour and applesauce. Let me know if you think they'd be OK. djk

Bax: You hang in there my friend. I do know one thing is for sure in all of this...if love could heal you, you'd be the happiest, healthiest boy on this earth.

Aimee, I don't know if the A/D can be baked into treats. It could be served on crackers, probably a no no for the carbs, or spread on raw veggies like zuchinni, or just licked out of a spoon the way my guys like it. BTW, when I first bought this stuff years ago, hubby tasted it and said it was one of the better pates he had eaten. He added salt or garlic salt and actually ate this pate on saltines. Lewis had to share with every newly opened can. It comes in cans about the size of tuna. And what about a bit of tuna as a snack for Baxter? Or canned Salmon?

More ideas. Can Baxter eat veggies like tomatoes? Does he like them? If so, what about holllowing out cherry tomatoes and filling them with the A/D or tuna? Does he like fresh spinach? If so, blanche the leaves till sliightly tender and fill with the A/D and roll up and refrigerate. Would make a tasty and non messy snack. Also, hardboiled egg whites filled with A/D or tuna salad would be a yummy treat. Can Baxter have yogurt? I make Petey treats with plain yogurt and peanut butter and freeze and call doggie ice cream. Try freezing canned low sodium chicken or beef broth in small plastic containers for a tasty pupsicle.

You definately don't want to feed carbs. Could you may bake some liver or kidneys for him. I'm sure Baxter would love them and they would be good for him too.

Sounds yummy I'll be certain to ask the vet about them. I would think if you use sugar free applesauce they should be fine as an occasional snack. I don't think the wheat flour has the same breakdown as white flour in the system. But, the girls told me to tell you to send them anyway and they will be sure to enjoy them if he can't

Every Sunday night, Bax gets a can of Salmon for dinner. He used to get mackeral but it started to give him diarrhea so we switched to Salmon. So far, so good! I can't believe he isn't "fished out" yet, he gets around 8000mg of fish oil a day :eek:

Yes, Baxter can have veggies. He loves veggies. Mmm, the rolled up spinach leaves sound tastey! The peanut butter and yogurt is a wonderful idea, thank you. I'll also have to try the pupsicles. I promise you there isn't anything that Baxter has ever turned his nose up to.

Could you may bake some liver or kidneys for him. I'm sure Baxter would love them and they would be good for him too.

I have a funny story for you. Awhile ago I went out and bought a beef liver so that I could bake some sunshine bait for the kids. I don't like liver but figured I would be able to deal with it to make the treats. I got home and went to cut it up but could not stop gagging the smell bothered me so bad. I ended up throwing the liver out. While at the butcher, I was told that liver should not smell that bad and that I had bought a bad piece. She guaranteed me her piece was fresh and so I bought a pound and took it home. It was wrapped up all nice and so I put it in the fridge. Later that night I go to get it out to bake and it has bled all over my refridgerator. By the time I got the fridge cleaned out, I had gagged so much that I lost my dinner in the kitchen sink. Twice now I've tried to deal with liver, think that three would be the charm?

On a more serious note, Baxter is fed preground raw mixes so he gets offal in each meal! I will however see if I can tolerate some lightly cooked chicken livers, maybe they aren't so bad
