Need Health Advise

Hello, my husband and I just found out yesterday that our boxergirl (10 yrs old) has a large mass on her spleen. We have a couple options... one is to do surgery and remove the spleen and have the chance it will spread to heart and lungs. Another is to let her be and keep a close eye on her and the final is having her put to sleep. All of the options are weighing heavy on my heart. The thought of her not being in our lives is killing us! Any sugguestions or comments would be welcome. Her name is Scooby and she is so beautiful! We've been down this sorrowful road before with our other boxer....Thanks

Wow! Terrible news. You have my sympathy. It sounds to me like there is no avoiding the risks depending on which option you choose. With that being said, I would say do what is more comfortable for the dog. If she is in a lot of pain, Id opt for the surgery. If thats the road you go down, you'll have to come to terms that she may need to be put to sleep if the surgery doesn't help.

I lost my Tossie to a mass on her spleen like this. I didn't have time to make a descision though because we only found out about it when it burst open and she was bleedng internally. We were going for a car ride and she basically collapsed in the backseat, luckily we weren't too far from the vet and we took her there. Somehow, on the way there, I just knew it was the end, that she would be leaving us, it was just a feeling and my heart hurt so bad. We could have done surgury but the vet wasn't too sure she would make it through because she had lost so much blood and it would be so hard on her and he said it may grow back in a few months. For what she had already been through, I couldn't put my baby through that. She was laying on the table with labored breathing because she was basically drowning in her own blood. It was the worst thing I have ever been through but we said goodbye to her then.

Follow your heart and listen to Scooby. Only you know what to do but whatever you do, keep an eye on her until you do it, I don't want to see her go through what Tossie did with the mass bursting. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Keep your chin up and give Scooby some love from us.

Thank you TossBranAbi & Noah N Brody for your kind words and support. We have made the decision to have the surgery on Scooby. Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (June 1) at 8am Kansas time. I don't want her to be in any pain and if this helps then I know we have done the right thing. I won't know until after he (doc) goes in to remove the slpeen how bad it really is. Right now the doc said that it is the size of a racquet ball and there is a possibility it has a slow leak. We've been down this road before and our other sweet boxer girl was way too far along with the cancer. Same exact cancer, on the slpeen and hers was the size of a grapefruit. She wasn't eating and all she did back then was sleep. This is the hardest part of loving our boxers! Saying goodbye is never easy, no matter how old! I have a friend here in Kansas who has a boxer that is 13 years old and still going strong!!! Thank you again for everything and please say a prayer tomorrow for Scooby, us and the doc!

We are hoping and praying here too. I am anxious to see how the outcome is because of what I went through with Tossie. I hope Scooby can be helped at this point and makes it. Please keep us updated.
