Just an FYI though....

I have never heard of a rescue group or shelter that will adopt out to someone with an intact dog.

You might want to get him neutered sooner rather than later, so you don't have any problems.

Good luck

If you want a breed that is easily recognized as a protector breed for your household I would go with a rottweiler. My old roommate had one and my boxer got along better with her than any other dog. They wrestled constantly. Harley couldn't knock her down so he would bite her feet till she fell down, it was hysterical. You have to make sure you go to a good breeder and rotties need more socialization and training, but they are great dogs and love children. Also, people just have to see them and they think twice about bothering you or your property.

Nestle has a couple of rottweiler friends. Rotties play the same as
boxers and they get along great. I agree that is a great match.

Boxer/Dobbie couple

Late I know, but I just saw this post now.
We rescue our Dobbie in 96 male/cropped. He is a sweetheart and LOVE babies.
We added the Boxer (male/ normal ears) because I had a fantastic experience with a boxer when young and our Dobbie got depressed when we left to go to work (we both work and long hours). Now we have 2 depressed dogs in the morning..
But our Dobbie is so special, so good, let our Boxer take everything from him and he's "kind of chicken" always running behind us from little yappers .
Our Boxer is the protective one as he always protected Timber from other dogs.

I would check it out an older Dobbie from a rescue organization. They are really good for show(meaning when we go to ATMs at night we take them both and if people ask if they bite we respond "only when they close their mouth") but both dogs are just big babies, and all they want is play and being scratched- Timber under his neck and Sir Lancelot on his back)
IMO I would check around with the rescue people and see with whom you dog will fill more confortable.
Also as for the play part, Timber always go for the neck, but he paws like a boxer after living for so long with Sir Lancelot.

Good luck and let us know your decision.

Boxer Insane
I think a doberman would be an excellent choice. My parents have had various breeds over the years and they have always said that their dobes were the best they ever had. The one they had when my brother was a toddler would let him pull on him and hit him with his toys. He was very protective of the entire family but was still very affectionate. I think the two would get along really well, but I would let them interact before I just brought one home.

I know this has been settled, but,

I just have to add my two cents. I have a female boxer, 2 and a female dobie, 10. They get along very well, but only because my boxer is not a dominant female. They do have different playing styles, but if the dobie were younger, she would be a very compatible playmate for the boxer. Molly and Willow are good "sisters" and I highly recommend a Dobie to any family. Molly is great with kids, she is not a one person dog, and she keeps the neighborhood pests away. Willow does her boxer part, she makes me laugh, and gives a good warning when the UPS man shows up! Just a note, Dobies are not quite as independent as Boxers, Molly insists on a pat now and then, when Willow might be happy to chew a bone by herself.
