Shelby My 8 month old had a few spots of red mange when I got her I am taking her to the vet she recieved her first dip yesterday. and they sent me home with antibiodics and 15 oral doses of a demodex med. The vet said that this can get very costly but can cure it. Has anyone else had this prob. I don't mind paying it. I will do anything I just need some reasurence that it can work....

My Annabell is going through the same thing right now. We are doing the dips every two weeks and antibotics. She is doing alot better now, she is beginning to lose her hair in the spots that were really affected but that is the only draw back. She is much happier now that she is not scratching all of the time and biting her self.
It is costly or at least it is for us here. And it is sort of dishearting to see your loved one losing there hair, but in the end it is better to have them feel better. Also my vet to me that since she has Red Mange that she has a low immune system until it is gone. And that I should try and keep her away from other animals so that she does not contract some else.

If you are talking about demodectic mange, there are far less invasive ways of helping your baby through it. Boosing the immune system is a must. If not already using, feed a high quality food and consider adding a nutritional supplement such as The Missing Link or even vitamins to their meals.
My female had this when she was 6 months old and we even put off having her spayed because of the added stress.
I started giving her Vitamin E, C, apple cidar vinagar, Flax oil, The missing link, and yogurt daily, and avoided having her dipped.
After 3 months, the mange was gone and her hair had returned and now is very healthy and happy.
Boosting the immune system helps them in other ways as well.
For the itching you can use Aveeno Oatmeal w/colliadal silver in their bath.
Also benedryl helps as well.

Take a look at my gallery. You can see how bad Shotze got and how she looks now. I didnt dip, I use Ivermectyin cattle/swine wormer and it has been a miracle drug. It only costs around $40 for 50ml and I STILL have over half a bottle left. You can get it at feed stores. You must ask you vet how much to give though because it can be dangerous. NEVER should be given to ANY hearding breed at ALL. (collie, sheltie, blue healer , etc.)
You can get over this without dips, but if its in an advanced state Id recommend Ivermectin. Ive had GREAT success with it.

WOW Shotze's mom....incredible!! My white Sasha had demodex but what we thought was a bad case was evidentally mild!! I refused to do the dips as they are so toxic so we treated her with lots of love....vitamin E....high quality food and some natural additives to her food which we still do to this day...
They get eggs, pumpkin, cottage cheese, apples and an occasional piece of meat...OH...and their favorite....they will come running for cheese!! Her mange cleared up within 2 months, but we had the support of our vet as well...he thought the dips were the quickest way to heal, but after i read how horrible they were i just could not do it! She gets sick enough to have to go to vet about every two months (not with the recurrance of mange)....her immune system is just not very strong!! Watch your baby and love them tons and tons!!

Need advice for ongoing hair loss
I'll try to be brief and to the point. I can use whatever help anyone has. It will be greatly appreciated. Grace just turned 1 and has been suffering from some skin condition. She has been tested for dermodex mange, sarcoptic mange, you name it she has been tested. All negative. She has had deep scrapes which only contributed to the condition when uncle Levi wanted to help clean the boo-boo and licked all the skin on her entire neck raw.
The only positive test was for a fungal infection which the vet said was some sort of ring worm. Well, needless to say I do not agree. I'm a mom of 4 with every kind of creature you can immagine and this no ring worm I've ever seen. But.... I'm not the vet. That said after 7 months and 100's of dollars I still have the same problem with no solution in sight. I am not willing to go the drug route again so I am searching out more natural avenues.
I have started doing research on my own and have started her on my own remedy but I would like some input. I am going to start the Ivermectin but want to know whether it should be given orally or subcutaneouly. I use it on my sheep and know from experience only true Ivermectin is worth the time or money but I have read differring oppinions as to the administration. Not only that it is not recommended for dogs. That said I know the breed risks and am willing to take the chance to get this under control.

In rescue, where we see many demodex boxers, we treat with oral ivermectin as well. Please, please get the proper dosage from your vet, but like someone suggested, buying at a local feed store is a lot cheaper. The brand we use most is Ivomec.
We are currently treating Kali and Chynna (http://www.savetheboxers.com/avail/kali.html or http://www.savetheboxers.com/avail/chynna.html) with oral ivermectin. But since they were so bad, we also did one dip. The dip had the desired effect and almost completely cured the incessant itching.
Demodex can be cured.
We also use Missing Link as a vitamin supplement and OxyDex shampoo to help keep them comfortable.

Tae has demodectic mange, too!
I'm glad this thread was started as we've been dealing with mange for 1-2 weeks now. I originally asked the vet about the fact that the side of Tae's little nose was red. He said it could be a bacterial or fungal infection, ringworm, or mange. We tried an antibiotic, which was actually prescribed for something else. No improvement. I made an appointment to take her back last Monday and when I returned from work, I noticed several "hot spots" (bald spots). They aren't too obvious to the "untrained" eye, though. So, the vet did a scraping and actually let me look at the slide. He said the mite in the scraping was a dead adult mite, which is a good sign--as opposed to having many alive baby mites. Anyhow, he told me that 90-95% of Demodex cases clear up on their own. He said we should hold off on doing anything else unless she gets more spots, since her 4 spots qualified as localized mange. This evening, I noticed another small spot.
I guess my question is, if we need to treat, is it best to go with Ivermectin or the Mitoban dips? From what I've read above, the dips can be dangerous. I guess I don't fully understand this, since the Ivermectin would be systemic treatment and the dips would be more topical. Can someone shed some light on this for me?
The dips would not be ideal for Tae since afterwards they'd put her in a crate and she has a confinement problem (panics), as confirmed by the behaviorist. Since stress can make mange worse, the crating is out of the question.

Ssleighter: those poor little puppies. Rocco looked pretty bad also 2 months ago. :( I wanna take them both home with me!!!

When we got our puppy from the Humane Society they already had him getting the Mitabin Dip (and quite honestly we didn't know that they may be unsafe). He seems to be responding pretty well to the Dips. He's also getting the Ivermectin shot. He goes once a week for both of these. We also give him pills to help boost his Immune System and so far everything seems to be working. Take a look at his pictures from 2 months ago in our gallery. There definintly is hope and your puppy will get better also. We'll keep Tae in our thoughts.

My lab has this as well. My vet was great and we opted to use Ivermectin. he did not want to use the dips as he said some states have banned them because of their danger to adults and dogs. he also said that demodex is the hardest form of mange to cure and that he tends to treat more aggressive. We also mixed our dogs dry food with a can of sardines as the oils are very good for the immune system and their coat. Abby responded great and now I always get comments on how great her coat looks. We gave her the ivermectin orally. My vet monitored her weekly to make sure we were giving her the proper dosage and we gradually increased her dose to the proper amount. We began with a smaller dose and worked up increasing daily until we got to the right amount so that it was not toxic to her system. We also got ours at a cattle store and followed his directions. Just a FYI, this is the main ingred. in heartguard so our vet told us not to give Abby heartworm meds while on this med. Hope your baby gets better!!!
