This is the craziest thing.....my male boxer (2 years old in May) WILL NOT let you clip his nails. He gets so upset that we are afraid he is going to hurt himself or one of us as we try to hold him down. There is no way hes letting those clippers anywhere near his feet! Any suggestions other than sedation?

Dozer will start to shake when he sees the clippers in my hand. It's a two people affair. One to do the clipping (me) while I sit on his leash and Dh softly petting him and feeding him spoonfuls of peanut butter, It's taken us a year to get this far. Good luck

Try using a nail file instead of clippers. No risk of injury to the dog and he might not freak out as much. Works good with our Molly. Good luck..

HA! Are you kidding? If it makes noise, I can just imagine him absolutely flipping out! Maybe the peanut butter thing will work, but doubtful. Any other suggestions?

Actually, if you are talking about the dremmel, it's not bad at all - you just have to introduce it right. ;) Get it out, sit in front of him, with it off - run it across his nails, paw by paw treating him after each one (have someone with PB handy). Then turn it on and treat him (do this a few times), then with it on pick up his front paw and get close to his paw and treat him, then touch one of his nails just for a split second and treat and so on...work your way up to it NOT being an issue. If he seems nervous at any point, back up a step. A little patience is all that's needed. And if all else fails...have your vet cut his nails. :)

I agree, the dremmel is not loud. One of my dogs is very sensitive to noises and she didn't mind the dremmel at all. She is scared of basically everything else that makes a noise (hair dryer, vacuum cleaner, etc.) I have the rechargeable dremmel and I love it. Doing their nails is so much easier now. I'd suggest trying it and introducing it very slowly. If it doesn't work for your dog, it's still a useful thing to have around because it does a lot of stuff besides trim dog's nails.

I just bought a dremel the other night at Walmart for $19.97. It's a 4.8 volt cordless. I have been looking at them for a while and wasn't sure which one I wanted to buy. This one is perfect.:D
It is the best twenty bucks I have ever spent. It's quiet and works GREAT.

We also use the dremmel.

For the fist 3 days of having the dremmel I didn’t put it anywhere near their nails all I did was turn it on and while it was running I fed them peanut butter. After awhile I could turn it on and they would come running. After conditioning them to associate the noise with a treat we laid them on their side fed them spoonfuls of peanut butter while the other person dremeled their nails. It’s a process but it works.

I didn't have much luck with clippers either. We started doing Grunt's nails with the dremel when he was a year old, and today at nearly 4, he lays in my lap and snoozes between paws (he gets a treat after each paw is done.). The introduction process can take a while, but it is well worth it. Give the dremel a try! :) Good luck.
