OK, so I get home from work today and my mom tells me that we got a complaint for the two neighbors that live behind us. Evidently they told my mom that our dog is vicious and needs to be tied up when in the backyard because he jumps up on the fence. They said "isn't that one of those rottweiler pitbull things? My mom says, no he's a boxer, and a sweet one at that. She then went on explaining the boxer breed to her but the lady still didn't buy it. So after I found out about this I ate dinner then decided to go on a walk with cash. Normally we just walk around the block and skip over the court that they live in which is right behind our house but this time I decided to walk up around the court then continue on the rest of the block. When I got to where the people lived both families were outside. The one lady that was being the worst about it was walking her little yappy dog on a leash in her front yard(the only other time it gets a walk is on a leash in the backyard). She then screams at me "get that dog away from here!" Remember that cassius is only 5 and a half months old and still small. I told her I could walk my dog here if I wanted and started telling her a bit about cassius and asking her questions. I ask her "have you ever had your dog in any classes or taken him to a dog park?" She replies no to both questions. I then go on to tell her that cassius has already completed one class and is on to the second. She asked me if it was a guard dog class and I chuckled. I told her it was an obedience class and showed her the commands cash knew. The neighbors without the dog apoligized but the other women still said she didn't want me walking cassius near her and said she was going to call animal control if he was jumping on the fence again. I laughed and walked away. From now on every one of my walks will be by her house, maybe I'll just take laps around the court :) Well sorry for this being so long, I just had to get it out.

That's so sad

It is sad that people are afraid of our babies. They'll never know the joy they can bring. But poking the stick at the proverbial hornets nest isn't a great idea. As mad as the ignorance gets us. It's great that you took the time to try to talk to her, and esp that the other neighbors did hear, and see first hand what you were saying. That lady obviously won't get past her issues.
Just going about your business, and maybe even trying to avoid her would be best. Who knows what she'd do if her yappy dog and cass ever got close enough. She would flip out if they played, or worse, snarls and growls started. For the safety of cash and your peace of mind (if she ever did call AC on you) I'd say let her live in her own world where all dogs should be small and mouthy. yah, I'm in a sarcastic mood. LOL If you have to walk that way, keeping a good relationship with the other neighbors and letting them interact with your baby is the best thing!

I read in the newspaper last year that people in my area were finding hotdogs stuffed with tylenol in their yards as if someone were trying to poison their dogs. I wouldn't mess with crazy people if I were you

I feel your frustration and anger. I chose not to pursue it when someone was being a jerk to me about Ginger, because I was afraid someone would try to hurt and/or poison my dogs. I SOO bad wanted to but I figured my own big mouth could get her hurt. I have a tendnecy not to be so nice when people insult my kids hehe, who knows what I would say. Althoug the first day I had her my backyard neighbor over the fence said "What a beautiful BOXER!" I about fell over. Ditto for the guy who came to install my satellite TV. At least not everyone out there is an uneducated idiot!

WOW, i have read several posts like this one on BW, and i can't believe how stuoid people can be, i guess i am just lucky, i live out in the country and the only real neighbors that i have, have a boxer of their own, plus they have a rott, both are extremely nice and well trained dogs, i really think all the majority of how dogs behave relates directly to their owners.

I am sorry that people living around you are such jerks. It was nice of you to TRY to talk to her, but if she wants to be rude I would just let her be! Today when I was walking Niko around our block we met two grown men who complimented him on how pretty he was. But instead of the one guy asking me how big he would get he asked his friend, and he said "oh they're small dogs!" Of course I had to tell him they were rather big dogs weighing between 60-70lbs, but the guy would rather believe his friend then the owner of the dog they were talking about!! Go figure, people are just strange! I don't think I would be able to keep my mouth shut if someone had a rude comment about Niko. I would try, but I know my head would explode holding it in!! Hey...maybe that would shut them up!!:p

I would print out some info about boxers and drop it off at her house with a note saying something to the effect of...

I know boxers fall into the muscular dog category and can be a little intimidating. Please take a minute to read some of this before you make up your mind. If you ever want to meet us up close to see what a wonderful dog he is, please feel free to give me a call.

Good luck. I have been in the same situation and it is very hard to keep your cool. Once most people meet Vegas and see him flip on his back for a belly rub, it is hard for them to think he is nasty.

Funny....your post made me think of almost every walk I have taken Hugo for in N. Mpls. I have people crossing streets to avoid him, weaving way around me, kids crying, etc. Many people ask me what type of dog he is. I get pitbull all the time. I have heard rottweiler too. Ha Ha. It's getting to the point if they ask, I tell each person a different dog. He's a rottweiler, He's a doberman, He's a pitbull, He's a poodle, etc. You get my point. Suprisingly, many people do know what kind he is and complement me/him. :)
