Dozersmommy that made me laugh really hard! Why are vets so clueless??
I read something that said vets only have to learn about pet nutrition one semester out of their 8 years of schooling! Not sure if that is correct but seems like it! They also get kickbacks from the food companies they carry in their offices, if they recommend them or sell them. So they never really learn about other choices available. It's really unfortunate. Lucky for us we have such a wonderful resource such as BW to help us so we know better! ;)

feeding your boxer what???

I have a 4 yr. old mix and a 9 wk. old boxer baby. the breeder was feeding her Iams puppy food. my 4 yr. old kept eating her food (we had him on bentiful) so I switched him to Iams adult since Jessy (puppy) was eating Butkis' (4 yr. old) food. what is this Chicken Soup stuff? I don't think I've seen it. Where do you get it? is there adult and puppy Chicken soup?

"Chicken Soup" is Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. A ridiculous name for a dog food, certainly, and one that's always going to get shortened. But it's a very high quality food. Yes, it comes in both adult and puppy versions - and like most high quality foods, the difference between them is minimal.

As for where to find it... Premium quality dog foods are usually found in feed stores and non-chain pet stores. You will only ever find junk in grocery stores, and the same in most big-chain petstores - they usually only carry the low end stuff that they can shift in bulk.

For information on what is in this food, and 500+ others of varying quality, you could check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews Note that for a puppy you should choose something in the 22-26% protein range (not higher) and it is always better to feed meat protein than that derived from plants or byproducts.

As for chicken soup itself - you can probably find a retailer from the manufacturers website (they, like most others, have a store locator): http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/cslocator_distributors.php

Well I've been switching Molly over to Chicken Soup this week. (She had been on Nutro Max) She's had some really runny stools. But today is better. She LOVES the new stuff. Just gobbles GOBBLES it up.

My neighbor feeds her dogs Iams, and when I told her about Chicken Soup she said "ohhhh well usually the hoity-toity-hippy brands are too much for their systems. That's probably why Molly is having diarreah." And I felt like a dog food snob. But she hasn't camped out at BW like me and she hasn't read dogfoodanalysis.com.

Needing some supportive kind words, because I feel like Molly is too good for Iams. And that makes me feel snobby and slightly overly concerned about my dog. Does that make any sense?

I know the feeling about feeling, "snobby" because I've done the research and know what's good and what's not. The other day, I was in the pet store picking up some dried liver treats for Tess. This store is fairly well stocked with decent foods, but also carries a lot of crap. Anyway, this woman was reading the ingredients on the back of Iams wet food for like 5 minutes. It was obvious she was trying ot determine if the food was a good choice, but she wasn't educated enough to look at the first ingredient and move on. I really wanted to say something, but I couldn't figure out how to without coming off as a "know-it-all." So, I didn't. Hindsight, I wished I'd asked her if she needed some help and explained that when I first got a dog I had no idea what was good and bad, so I did a lot of research and here's what I found...

Oh well! Next time...

At any rate, some people will always thing, "It's a dog! Who cares what you feed it?!" My uncle is a doctor and said that when I suggested he put their dog on a higher quality food. With people like that, you just have to be glad that you're not their dog and hold your tounge when dog food comes up.

I am interested to see what the vet has to say about the food.

I just switched Jack and Bella to Chicken Soup. I have never seen mydogs enjoy their food this much. Bella actually got all happy and would run over to the bowl and grab a few pieces of food in her mouth and hop into the next room literally and eat it there. I dont know why, although, I am sure my other boxer Jack might be being a bully :) They both love it!! LOVE IT!
