I was surprised that the vet techs and the vet in training had never heard of Chicken Soup either.

People would ask me, what kind of food i feed them and when i would tell them, they would always look confused. Then they would say some brand like Eukanuba or Iam's was the good stuff. I don't even argue with them. Hey you can feed your dog whatever, but for me and my babies it's Chicken Soup!

I just thought I would chime in here on the vets don't know anything about nutrition topic. I'm a registered dietitian (for people obviously :) ) and to tell you the truth, doctors don't know anything about human nutrition either!! MDs too get very little training in nutrition, maybe an afternoon seminar and that's really it. Unless a doctor takes a particular interest in nutrition, they are really quite useless in this area. It seems as though it's similar for vets too.

I feed my boxer Canidae. When my vet asked what I was feeding him, she said she had never heard of it. I had told her that when we first adopted Ricky the vet recommended ProPlan and he loved it. But, I had done some research and found that ProPlan wasn't very good at all and Canidae is a very high quality choice. She said "Is this site put out by the Canidae people?" I explained that no it wasn't and it goes over the ingredients one by one and pros/cons etc of many, many foods. I told her that I liked the fact there is no corn, by-products, soy etc. Her reply was (I swear I'm not making this up) "I don't have a problem with by-products or corn. I eat corn, I like it, it tastes good." HELLO....you're not a dog.....

Then, get this, when I told her that I am a dietitian so I do take a particular interest in what he eats. She said "Oh boy did he get the wrong person to adopt him!!" Do you believe that!!?!? I replied "Or the right one!" I couldn't believe she said all those things.

I think I'll ask for a different vet next time. I'm dying to hear from the original poster as to what their vet said after reading the ingredients for CS.

I truly believe that there are informed vets and uninformed vets and I think I see a trend! The uniformed ones seem to be the ones who don't believe in alternative medicine. The informed ones who offer such services as accupuncture and chiropractic care generally tend to have a focus on nutrition as well because they see the link! I had gone to see my vet that I switched to for my Rottweiler when she was about 3, because she was uncharacteristically grouchy and just seemed to be blah - other than that no real complaint. He took one look at her and asked what I was feeding her, when he found out it was Eukanuba, he explained to me why it was a poor food and gave me the names of several other quality foods. Then he explained to me what ingredients to look for in a high-quality food and which ones to avoid. Sure enough, switched her food, and she felt much better :) So there are informed vets out there, you just have to find one. I didn't know how lucky I was until joining BW - thanks everyone - I feel like such a better puppy mommy now!!!!!

We want to take Rita's nutrition seriously as I imagine any proud mom or dad would as well, prior to joining BW we never knew anything about nutrition and I was one of those people that swore up and down that Science Diet was one of the best on the market. Thank God we found the dogfoodanalysis.com website and did some real researching, Rita is going to get CS as a puppy and then as an adult either CS, Can, or another 5 or 6 star choice. We won't accept anything less for your little girl...
