My success with Raw

I just wanted to share something that happened yesterday in my home, it is related I firmly believe to my switch to the raw diet.

History:
My female boxer is 6 yrs old. At 6mo's old she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in both hips. The vet gave the prognosis that I would most likely have to make that "Quality of Life" issue when she was between the ages of 5 and 8 yrs. And that most likely she would need to be on medication for life as well.
Fast forward to last winter-spring, I noticed that she was more grouchy and not moving around very well. She even skipped sleeping with me a couple of times and opted for sleeping in her crate. She has never done this before, but now my bed is pretty high. So I took her into the vet, he confirmed Hip Dysplasia, and then diagnosed arthritis in the back, knees and hips. Then he found a spinal disk lesion which is a degenerative spinal cord injury. He also confirmed that within the next 4 yrs or so I would have to make the "quality of life" decision. I put Kaite on 650mgs of asprin a day along with 2500-3500mgs of glucosimine/chondrotin a day.
After doing this for 2-3 months, I started thinking about switching to raw. At the same time I was having trouble with my male boxer and his allergies. So I thought "What the heck, let's give raw a try"

Recent Developments:
So I started the raw diet back in May, I immediately saw a distinct and vast improvement in my female. I slowly backed off the medications and she started to thrive. She has finally lost the last 5-10lbs that she has been carring around, keeping up with my 1 yr old boxer boy, and is not grumpy. She is now off medications altogether and doing great. She looks fabulous and I have heard many remarks on her new "life" since the diet change. So, I thought, well I bought at least 2 more years on her life. It is worth all the extra work and effort I have to go through to see her so healthy.

The thing that made me cry last night:
Since little miss Gemini has been staying with us and I really dont like all the crates in my home, I decided to turn my son's (who recently moved in with his dad) room into Kaite's crate. I just put the baby gate up and let her have the whole room (after I removed all "Chewable" items).
So last night I had someone over to check out Gemini, and I put Kaite in the room and put up the gate. I let the people into the house, I was holding little Gemini, and look over at Kaite. At that exact moment I saw her JUMP the gate! I stood in shock and then started getting teary eyed. THe people didnt understand, they just dont know that Kaite has been UNABLE to jump a gate since she was 2 yrs old. And now at 6.5yrs old she jumped the gate.

I have said it before, but last night just made me want to say it again: The raw diet is the best thing I have ever come across. I NEVER thought that she would ever be able to jump a 2.5ft gate again. And she cleared it with room to spare and just wiggle butted all over the place.

I want to extend my deepest thanks and gratitude to all the people who helped me make the switch to raw. I want to thank Olly, for providing an environment where I could get the information that I needed when I needed it. Thank you to Gmac and Jan who all but physically held my hand through this switch. No matter how much it costs, no matter what happens over the next 4-5yrs. Last night, watching my girl jump a baby gate like a teenager made everything worthwile.

Thank you EVERYONE!

Hi Carolyn...that is just great. You won't believe this, but I was just telling my parents this morning how much improvement you have seen in Katie girl since switching to raw. I'm so happy she is doing so well. I just may have to stop by to see for myself!

Carolyn, I know how you feel.:) mattie and samson are just thriving on a raw diet. no weight issues and I really believe that samson has bought some more years with his CM. mattie had hip dysplaysia and had the TPO when she was a year old I only did 1 hip and was told back then that the other hip would need to be done also. but not now mattie is doing great. she also suffered from anel gland problems but no more. my dogs look healthy and there coats are so shiney and smooth. no skin issues that go along with boxers. so hats off to raw appicon

You've inspired me to try RAW tonight. I went home at lunch and took some chicken legs/wings out of the freezer. We'll see how she does. I'm kind of nervous about the bone/choking thing, but i'll try not to be a worry wart!
My husband will probably think I'm off my rocker feeding the dog raw food!

Here goes nothing...

My pups are not old enough to have health problems other than allergies which is why I switched. But their beautiful coats are what always gets people's attention. The shine is unbelievable. Their eyes are clear, their teeth are white, and they look so healthy. Why would any body not want that for their dogs?

Carolyn, I so glad Kaitie is getting a second childhood.

You do not want to do legs. They are weight bearing limbs and are much more likely to splinter. I would either use necks or wings. Necks I feel work the best because there is more meat on them. Also you want to make sure to skin them before giving them to her. Too much fat in the skin.

Chicken legs are fine. It is only in large animals like cows that you want to avoid feeding weight bearing bones. Chicken wings are actually much more dense than the legs and are best avoided. I actually feed chicken legs all the time and I have often fed turkey legs as well without any problems.

Carolyn it's really great that your girl is doing so well. I think that switching Markus to raw was the best thing I ever did and that it helped him to live a longer life. :)

Did you switch from a high quality kibble? I am about a month into RAW. I have no intention of switching back but to be honest I see no real difference other than size of the poo has diminished. I was on a grainless kibble so maybe that is why I see no change in coat ect.. On the plus side ALL the dogs made the switch with ease and love love meals.

A side question. Are spare ribs O.K?
