My first experience with a protective boxer

So yesterday evening I went to the home of lady that I got my boxer puppy from to pick up her registration papers. The lady owns two boxer females, Maya's mom and Riley a fawn 8 year old. I have only met these dogs a couple of times and just barely interacted with them. But yesterday the breeder was showing me how protective her boxers can be. She pretended to spank her daughter in front of Riley ( the 8 year old boxer). To my surprise Riley bolted towards the mom got in between her and the little girl and gently grabbed her arm to stop her from "spanking the child". I was in shock honestly i had never seen that before. Then she went on to pretend to hit my leg continuously and once again Riley got in between me and the lady and tried to grab or push her arm away from hitting me. I was even more surprised at how Riley came to protect me even though I have only met her a couple of times in the past and barely petted or touched her. That experience just reassured me about my decision to get a boxer. I know that with lots of love and proper care for my little girl Maya, she will the best Boxer she can be.

By the way during Riley's attempts to stop the lady from her pretend slaps she had full control of Riley, whenever she wanted Riley to stop she would yell "OUT" and Riley would stop and sit attentively.

My Cora does this. Just walking around like you have something to hide, or you're trying to avoid her gets her going. Raise an arm or even just speak that you're going to hit someone and she gets in front of you. And she stop on command which I think is just awesome. Kahner on the other hand usually turns around and walks to the nearest couch so he can fall asleep .

While it's not an activity that I would make a habit of, our first boxer would bite my husband's (then boyfriend and Capone was his dog) shoes and pull on his laces if we were goofing around and he picked me up or pretended like he was hitting me. Funny thing was that I could hit him and Capone didn't care. Maybe they can sense who is physically weaker and know that is the person who needs protecting.

Yes, love, care and LOTS Of training and consistency! Your mantra will be patience and consistency for the next 1-2 years. Boxers are amazing dogs but you couldn't pay me to raise another boxer puppy...I prefer to get them at about 3y/o after the crazies have somewhat subsided. Have fun with your new baby!

I had the same thing happen, tho' I never married the boyfriend. He playfully shoved me one day and his dog got between us and protected me. I was already smitten with his boy but fell in love then. I knew I would have a boxer of my own after that.

After I married my husband and he got me a boxer, Star, we actually trained her to protect me. He would play hit me and she would "bite" him. My husband's job has had him travelling since we have been married so he wanted a dog that would protect me. What was funny is after we got Thor, he and Star would tag team protect. If they heard something Thor would stay by my side while Star went to investigate. I know to this day Thor would do anything to protect me. Arabella, I'm not so sure about. She is so reactive to noise tho', I don't think anyone would even try.

Wow i am impressed with the breed still. I know not all of boxers will react the same way, but i am glad to hear similar stories. It has now been almost 3 weeks since i got Maya, and it seems like i have had her forever. Whenever i have a bad day at work my only thought is to go home to her since i know her crazy little puppy self will cheer me up.

Riley is our boxer & he just turned 1 & my daughter Savanna is 2. whenever she is playing with her sisters ( which are 17 & 19) or even her daddy, if Riley thinks they are being to rough with her he will get between them & the baby. The other day my husband did not heed his warning so Riley bit him on the butt!!! I couldn't even fuss at him because he was protecting his friend!! I just laughed at my husband & told him next time he needs to listen to the dog!!
