Just met with Animal Control. It takes 3 dog attacks to be designated a "dangerous dog". They want us present to id the dogs--no problem with that.

Did animal control say if the dog has attacked before? I hope all of the dogs are recovering from the attack and do not experience psychological trauma from it.

I have this problem at the minute. We have a pitbull living next door he is left all day and night in the garden on his own. He barks non stop 24/7 the owners are out most of the time. If Cooper and Kymba are in the garden playing he goes mental jumping up the fence and growling at them we have had to block the top part of the fence off as he nearly got over going crazy at Kymba, which scared her so much she wouldn't go out in the garden near his side. We never leave them outside without one of us now as i know he will attack them if he gets in the garden. The owners just don't seem to care what the dog does.
Please continue to be really careful and don't leave them outside by themselves. My mum had two Staffies living next door who did this and recently they managed to get into her yard and mauled Mum and Bro's Lab to death. Shiver went down my spine when I read it as it sounded so familiar.

That sounds ridiculous to me. You must be annoyed - I would be.

More than a dangerous dog tag they should make a stupid human owner tag.

I AGREE.

Hope your pups are doing well and I hope they aren't left with any emotional scaring eg develop fear based agression

We haven't gone over there yet to id the dogs, we just gave them the address yesterday.

I am a little worried about Skye. We walked by a neighbor with a male boxer and Skye really got his hackles us and started growling--not like him at all. He's usually really laid back. :(

I'm hoping his true nature returns with time.

Same thing happened to Ruby after she had an incident with another dog in January. We had to take her to the places we knew there would be well supervised dogs and we would check with their owners if they were dog friendly and explain her reaction in advance (so they didn't freak) and why it was happening (that she had had a very bad experience) and then introduce her to these dogs (only one at a time as I didn't want to overwhelm her). I found that all of the owners we came across during this time were so understanding and helpful when we had explained everything. We were basically trying to ensure she had lots and lots of GOOD experiences with other dogs different ages, sizes, sexes (basically starting her socialising all over again) and after lots and lots of these meetings (sometimes we'd go out twice a day) she became herself around other dogs again. Thats why I expressed my concerns for your babies in an earlier post. Hope it gets better.

Positive socialization will be the thing that will help him overcome his fear now. He may have fear aggression from his experience. Lily is still recovering from a year ago attack. She will react with aggression if another dog even slightly shows any assertiveness. Lily has the attitude of "Gonna prove I am tough before you can show me I'm really not".

Please work's posting summed it all up. Gonna take some time and patience, but you can help him overcome this and hopefully be back to his usual social self. Let him have positive experiences with a quick hello to another dog and then walk away before he has any reaction. He will learn not every dog wants to hurt him. But try your best to get him to say hello and then take him away before any reaction. Let him end on a good note each time. If a reaction happens, then slow things down and be prepared for him to go backwards if a negative reaction occurs.

Super Boo: Is animal control even going to do anything after you ID them? When my brindle (puppy at the time) got bit we had animal control come out and filed a report (it was only a small puncture wound) and we didn't know where they lived but the guy basically told us all they would do is find out if the dog was up to date on shots and recommend that we get a rabies shot if it wasn't. He basically said that there was nothing he could do because the dog (who the lady dropped the leash and let it run after and attack my on leash puppy) bit another dog and not a person. Could just be animal control in virginia though-they seem pretty useless here.

I am sorry to read about your experience. Me & Sal (before Sam came along) had a similar exp. w/ a pit- it is why I won't take Sal & Sam to dog parks anymore. Day camp is a lot more controlled and safer.
Speedy recovery to your furkids!!!

From what they said, 3 animal attacks and they are registered as "dangerous" and can only be taken out by specific people (no kids etc) and have to be kept on a 6 ft leash at all times. I really was not going to get animal control involved except that several friends and neighbors were concerned that they may do it again. We also do not know if they have any past record. I just mailed the report in so I haven't gone to the address yet. Also, if we have to sue for the vet money back, it'll help to have it recorded with the County--we can use their report.
