My dog is suddenly having seizures

Hello! I'm just looking for suggestions/advice from anyone who has experience with seizures.

My boy Duke is 10, and until Friday, he was totally active and healthy. He had a few what I would consider minor seizures Friday (he would just stand there opening and closing his mouth, and producing a lot of saliva). He had 3 of those Friday and I got him to the vet that afternoon. The vet did a blood test that turned out fine. She couldn't really give me any answers as to what caused this very sudden change. She suggested waiting a day and seeing what happened and told me about puting him on Phenobarbitol if he has more seizures. Well, on the way out to my car, he had a BIG seizure, he fell to the ground and started convulsing and foaming at the mouth. They took him back in and gave him some rectal valium (at around 6:30 p.m.) and sent me home with more to give in case he had any more seizures.

He didn't have any others overnight and I thought we were maybe out of woods, but then he had one Saturday morning. I was gone for a few hours, so I didn't witness it, but when I got home, he was calm enough that I decided I didn't need to give him the valium. He made it until midnight, then had another. I called his vet and she said to give him 4cc of valium (rectally), so I did. The thing that is really worrying me right now is that he lost the use of his back legs after the seizure, and now it's 4:45 a.m. and he still can't use them (they're like rubber).

He has never had any history of seizures, and this is shocking to me that this came on so suddenly. I can't think of anything toxic that he might have gotten into, but I'd like to think that it is something like that as opposed to epilepsy, since it came on so suddenly.

I've been researching online all night about this and have learned a lot from these discussion boards and other sites, but I haven't been able to find anything about this paralysis lasting so long. Does anyone have any information they could share with me. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry to hear Duke is having trouble :( And I hate to bring up the possibility, but has your vet considered the possibility of a brain tumour? That is another possibility for his symptoms beyond poisoning or epilepsy, and in a 10 year old dog may perhaps be the more likely. Hopefully it is not the case.

There are quite a few threads on these forums about brain tumours, possibly a search of those may bring up some more useful information for you.

I am so sorry to hear that your boxer is having seizures. :( I am afraid that my first thought was maybe a brain tumour too. It sounds like you need to go back to the vet for some more tests. If it is just seizures, some phenobarbitol should help. I am sending some positve healing vibes your way.

By the way, you need to post your introduction in the Introductions Forum. It should have actually been your first post as per the rules that you agreed to when you joined this forum.

Good luck

I'm so sorry Duke is having seizures..I know they are very frightening..I endorse the fact you need to consult your vet again..they can run more comprehensive tests to clarify the situation, to give an accurate diagnosis, and give you a full prognosis on the situation.
My Poppy seemed perfectly healthy for her age 'till she collapsed with a violent seizure, The diagnosis was a brain tumour, but I am praying that Duke will have something much less sinister...Sending lots of love and healing vibes your way.

I hate to hear about your babys problem. I wonder if your vet has considered the heart as being the problem. I had a poodle years ago that started having seizures at about 10yrs old. His problem was an artery (either closing or shrinking).

Thank you for your responses - Duke is no longer with us

I want to thank everyone for their responses, thoughts and prayers. I had to put my precious baby to sleep this morning. I can only hope and pray that he's at peace now - and like my 2 young daughters say, running around doggie heaven, licking everyone (and maybe a bar of soap, too)! We love and miss you Dukester!

I am terribly sorry for your loss. I know there are no words that I can say to make you feel better at this time but just know that Duke is pain free now playing at the Bridge with all of our loved ones and one day we will all meet again.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
