My Daughter Cannot Hear Too Well!!

Xenaprincess....and to the other mom who's daughter lost her hearing due to meningitis( sorry i forgot your name)
according to canadian criteria(i dont know USA) here they will only implant a child that has severe to proufound loss in both ears and the cut off point used to be 90db but now it has been lowered to 70db.
My daughter Mia was born profoundly deaf (unknown cause) in both ears 120db in both totlly flatline....she has absolutely no hearing left in either ears(i was told this is very unusualand rare)
Saying all that....in the USA beacause you do not deal with the governement having to pay for this ...you have private coverage...you might just be able to get it done.
I will just tell you from personal experince that it has changed our family
Mia who is now just over 3 speaks in 4 to 6 word sentences and is doind fantastic
Yes surgerey is very tramatic...i think more so on us parents....XENAPRINCESS i am with you all the way...i know how you are feeling( where is the surg being done by the way?)
Your little angel will do fine...like Mia's ENT told me ...doing tubes...is a piece of cake!!
Bring her lots of posicles and freezes to enjoy and colouring books...playdough..
I may suggest you ask them to give her gas before the needle ...they did that for Mia.I will be thinking of you both

tasillo, thanks so much for your kind words and good advise. Jessicas' surgery will be done at the hospital here in Cornwall (we have an excellent ENT). I was opting for the needle for her because my oldest sons' reaction to the gas was horrible, and he ended up having to stay overnight (was day surgery) because of the vomitting! BUT, I'm afraid if she's anything like the rest of her family, myself and extended included, she just may get sick from the anesthetic no matter how they give it to her! :(

3 of my 4 children have had tubes put in their ears and have always done great afterwards. They gave my kids Versed (we call it the I don't give a sh*t shot-although it isn't a shot it is a liquid they have them drink) and after that takes affect they have NO idea what is going on around them. Most likely they will give her that to calm her down before the surgery, they don't usually let the parents walk to the OR so it makes it easier on them if they are out of it.

Good luck, let us know how she does & don't be surprised if you see A LOT of yucky stuff draining from her ear. Keely my 19 month old had a 2nd set of tubes put in, in Nov and they still drain on & off.

Actually when Mia had her operation...they told us that if i felt comfortable enough i could bring her into the OR.
But she was very young...11 months...so the nurse ended up taking her in her stroller.
The staff at the hosp was simly amazing.
But there is nothing like the minute you are handing your child over.....if you are like me you will be fighting back tears.
I was a basket case.....i still am..LOL
Mia's surg...was almost 3 hours....that day she just wanted to be held and the night was the same.

In all my experiences before with my oldest son and his MANY surgeries on his adnoids (they grew back 4 times!!), my father was always right there with me for support. He would take me down to the cafeteria and we would talk and before ya know it...my son was back in his room! Now...my dad has passed on, my mother will be gone that day, Jessicas daddy is no longer here (moved out of town), so I will be by myself and I know I will be so emotional. Like tasillo said, there is nothing like handing your child over...the tears come naturally!
Barb...thanks for the kind words! I was nicely surprised to see your post! I have been wondering where you have been! Missed ya 'round her gf! (how's grade 8 coming along for ya?..).

Sharon...I'm sure Jessica will do just fine! I rather like the suggestion of the "spiked" juice!

On a funny note..when I was 14 I had my tonsils and adnoids removed...as I was sitting in the wheelchair waiting to go in to the surgery suite, my Doc walked past me, he was in scrubs headed towards the surgery suite. He scratched his A$$! OMG! All I can say is I hope he went and scrubbed before he put those hands in my mouth! You can tell I was traumatized, as I still remember it 20yrs later! I hope your Jessica doesn't see anything of this sort, or you..for that matter!

Oh geez Jessica...ewww!! I'm pretty sure they are not allowed through the OR doors (room) until they have scrubbed..least we would like to think!
You just made me think of the heart specialist I had to see a few weeks ago. Upon leaving his office, I had to wait for the secretary to book another appt. I heard the doctor talking in his office and was sure no one went in there after I came out. I glanced towards his office and saw him speaking into a recorder...with his finger buried to the last knuckle in his nose!! :eek: I don't want to see him again...but he is the only specialist here who is available (wonder why)!!
