My Daughter Cannot Hear Too Well!!

My 4yr old, Jessica, has had 2 very major ear infections in the last couple of weeks that have been treated with antibiotics. She spent a day in the hospital as she spiked a fever of 105.6 (again!!) and was close to convulsions! She was put on a heart monitor and her fever was treated and it came down after about 1-2hrs! She has since finished all her antibiotic but now cannot hear too well at all! We have to be looking at her when we speak to her or she doesn't hear us. The volume on our TV is usually kept around 17-20. Jessica has it anywhere around 55-60!! She is speaking loud and not pronouncing her words correctly (she has always had an excellent vocabulary)! I made an appointment with a specialist and she sees him on the 9th for a hearing test. In the meantime, I was told to put a few drops of baby oil in her ear to help drain the wax. I did, but she had an allergic reaction to the baby oil (like me...I cannot use baby oil on myself at all)! Someone told me I could use any oil...even vegetable oil! I am reluctant because I never heard of that, but what can it hurt?
I am concerned because I was also told that sometimes after severe ear infections, especially like what Jessica had with the high fevers, can result in permanent hearing loss! :( So, I am curious if any of my BW friends have experienced this and can offer some advice on how I can help her for now until her appointment on Thursday? I can see that her ears are totally plugged and she is not too thrilled with me going near them at all!! She has always had very sensitive ears! My 2 boys have never suffered like this (teenager had tonsils and adnoids removed at the age of 4), so it's kinda new for me. I just want to help my baby to hear clearly again...she is getting so frustrated! :(

Is it mineral oil she is allergic to or the perfumes in baby oil? If it is the perfumes you can buy a product call sweet oil, it is just pure mineral oil. You warm it up and put a few drops in. Also moist heat helps an ear ache.

I would not advise you to put anything in the ear without first consulting with the doctor, or better yet, and ENT (ear, nose, and throat specialist). She probably has sterile fluid remaining in her ear, which happens frequently after antibiotic therapy. This fluid will usually go away by itself as the body's own natural ventilation pathway (the Eustachian tube) gradually drains the ear.. There is no use in giving many courses of powerful antibiotics in an attempt to clear up the fluid once the infection is gone. Also, there is no good evidence that other medications help speed up the process of fluid drainage. Hope your daughter feels and hears better soon ~ Cathy

Use E-3 oil. It is a combination mix of garlic, mullin, lobelia and olive oil. Trust me on this I know what I'm talking about. You can buy it at an herb store or online. It CANNOT hurt her in any way. When you get it warm the bottel under warm running water to so the drops are not cold. PUt 2-3 drops in each ear a few times a day. My daughrer had SEVERE ear infections to the point tubes were discussed. We did the antibiotic thing over and over and over. Someone else suggested I use E3 oil and I gave it to her when she got another infection. I swear to you she never had another infection ever. I have used it in my own ears for earaches and they went right away. My son had one ear infecton as a baby and I used it on him and he never got another one. My sister in laws baby had the same problem with infections, she used it and it went away. If you cannot find E3 oil you can mix some of your own my mixing some liquid garlic (kyolic) with mullin and lobelia in olive oil, equal parts of each. You can buy these separately if you have to at the herbal/health food store. I mixed it myself the first time and bought it the othe times. If you Google Truman's E3 oil you can find it online.

Maniago...yes it's the perfume in the oil. I also thought mineral oil would be better than vegetable. Vela..I'm out and about today so I will look for E-3 oil and if I can't find it I will try sweet oil. We do have a very large herbal/health store so I may have some luck finding it.
I was always told that overuse of antibiotics at her age will only reduce her immune system later in life usually resulting in stronger antibiotics for any infection. I am always willing to go the natural/herbal way instead. Thanks alot guys...I'm going to give your suggestions a try today! Hopefully it works for her. The landlord next door actually called this morning complaining that our TV was too loud!! Oh well...not like its after 11 at night!! Geesh! :rolleyes:

Is her ears clogged from swelling because of the infections or are they clogged from excessive ear wax? My daughter had a terrible ear infection and it was so bad they put her on Cipro antibiotics, which are very strong. She had a large wax plug deep into the canal afterwards and could not hear well, she said it sounded muffled, and she spoke loud and not plain. I took her to the hospital and they flushed it and the plug came out and all was well again with her hearing. This may not be the case with your daughter, just thought I would share it incase it could be.

I am with Robyn... no advice but working hard on healing vibes for Jessica! Willis sends her licks and wiggles too . Hope it is just the swelling... ear infections are nasty business.

Debbie...I think her ears are plugged with wax or fluid. The opening of the ear seems so tiny I cannot even get a Q-tip in there, however I do see wax around the opening. I went looking for the E-oil and sweet oil that was mentioned earlier but with no luck! I bought mineral oil, warmed it and put 2 drops into each ear. It wasn't easy as Jessica is very sensitive in the ears. So far there is no change so I will try again tonight after her bath when she is more settled and calm. Thanks for the vibes all...she certainly can use them!

Sharon last year my Robbie had an ear infection and the antibiotics didn't clear it up, so they gave him a stronger one which made him sick, so when I called the dr. and told them that they wouldn't change the med. Pretty much told me too bad he has to take it. NOT! So I took him to an ENT that same day, and he was really pi$$ed at the situation. There was so much puss behind Robbie's ear drum he was having trouble hearing. So he sucked it out and put him on drops and an antibiotic called Omnicef. The infection did go away, but I had to take him back for a hearing test and unfortunately he does have some permanent hearing loss in that ear.

I hope your daughter feels better soon, maybe you could have her lay on a warm heating pad or something. I know drug stores sell these kits that are for ear wax removal, but peroxide is good too.
