I always associated leg lifting with masculinity and have been told to "count my blessings". Apparently leg lifting can be a sign of potential dominance/aggression issues later on. I've also been told if he wasn't lifting before the "op" he most likely will not. I was bothered before, but not now. - Lisa

When Chewy was still alive, he lifted his leg to pee, but had the most terrible aim. Too Funny!!!

Now Ruby is another story. She is so weird, she actually lifts her leg when she marks her territory. She sort of does this hop, skip, lift her leg thing and then pees. But she squats when its a real pee. Way too funny!!!wackicon

I read somewhere that boys are supposed to lift their legs at about 9 months old, well Bingo was out in the yard one day right in front of our bow window, walked up to a tree, lifted his leg and walked away! He was 9 months old to the day and I was jumping around and freaking out! I even called my husband at work to tell him our boy had become a man!!!! fiestaicon

I think it has a lot to do with how much testosterone they have. At the time we had been traveling a lot with bingo and he was smelling other dogs scents a lot. so I think that attributed to it. My Aunt has a male also but really wasn't around other dogs and he still really doesn't lift his leg. Although he came over to play with Bingo one time and it was a pee train around the yard,,,first Tiger would pee, then Bingo, then Tiger, then Bingo, the Tiger, then Bingo.....and on and on! Of course Bingo would have to alter his style because Tiger was peeing on the grass not on the trees! ........oh yeah,,,,,,,and Bingo also has terrible aim! He pees on his leg constantly, the looks at you and his leg like "oh my god,,,,there is PEE on my leg!!!"

I wish my 9 month old male would lift his leg. When we decided on a male we thought we would avoid the grass burns in the backyard that are ususally caused by such a heavy urine concentration in the same spot. We've had to resod a good section of our backyard because over the winter he could only access a small area of the backyard that was cleared for him. I'm very much looking forward to the leg lift and not because it makes him look masculine.

My boy boxer doesn't lift his either

I have a NINETEEN month old neutered male (Butkus). He doesn't lift his leg either. I feel, all the time, like telling him, "Stop squatting like a girl and pee like a man Butkus!"

I had another mixed breed dog, years ago, that took until he was almost three years old to learn to lift his leg...maybe all of our dogs will "Get it" one day!

To LuvMyBoxer

I just thought I would tell you that my first boxer was named Butkus, I never heard the name after he died. It was just neat to know that there is a nother Butkus out there.

Boxers named Butkus

When we met him, we were torn between Butkus and LockJaw (which is evidently some sort of comic book character dog). He looked like a Butkus and WE got his name from the Mastiff in the first Rocky movie.

Did you have alot of problems with people saying, "Oh, Butt Kiss? That's funny!"? I am CONSTANTLY telling people, "It's not butt kiss, it's more like butt cuss"

:D

Butt Kiss

We named ours after a football player or coach, I can't remember which, it wasn't my idea. The name really fit him though so I grew to like it. Yes people were always asking why we named our dog Butt Kiss, we always had to tell them the story and the right name. He was a good dog.

Boxers named Butkus

Well, truth be told, we got Butkus from the Rocky movie, but if I'm not mistaken, THAT Butkus was named after the same guy YOUR Butkus was.

His name's Dick Butkus and he was both a football player and a coach later on.
