Boxer Insane
I haven't been on Boxerworld in a very long time, but I needed to post this.
I lost my Conner to a heart condition in August of this year. It was unexpected and completely heartbreaking.
We had known that Tess was terminal for a year before we lost Conner. She had a disease called degenerative myelopathy, which starts with paralysis in the rear of the spinal cord and moves upwards. I've never made a harder decision than I did the day we let her go.
I am thankful that neither of them were ever in pain.
I can't decide which hurts worse...losing one suddenly, or knowing it's coming and having to make a choice. I don't think that one hurts less than the other. It is just an excruciating loss no matter how it comes.
I want to thank you all for your advice, kindness and support through the early years when I was trying to figure out how to be the best dog mom I could be. You made me better and I'm so, so thankful.
I wrote this the morning after Tess died.
For Tess:
Today started without you and I'm not sure what to do.
For 10 years, every morning, my first duty was to you.
The early years, you woke me, wanting to eat or play.
The last one, as you struggled, I carried you through the day.
I'll get my coffee first today, put one foot in front of the other, as I go about my day remembering how we loved each other.
You bounced into my life one day from Texas on a plane.
We were each other's family before the others came.
I will not see a day go by without a longing thought, of all the precious moments that I thought were long forgot.
Rest easy baby girl, thanks for being a constant friend.
My love for you, my first born child, will never, ever end.
Thank you for always being there to answer every silly question, my boxerworld family. My heart is so broken without my dogs, but reading your stories and questions about your young ones makes me smile. Thank you.
