MRI scheduled for Hoss

Our sweet 7 year old boy Hoss has not been himself for awhile now. We're afraid it's a brain tumor, or something else neurological is going on. The wait is going to kill me, can't get the MRI done until next Thursday. In the meantime, he's on meds so hoping he is at least not in as much pain. All the research I've done points to tumor. It is so sad watching him and seeing how different his behavior is. I'm kicking myself for not getting this scheduled sooner. We'd been going back and forth just because of the cost. Ultimately decided we'll have peace of mind knowing something, anything before just giving up on him. The past few weeks have been rough and I've been crying my eyes out. Why does this have to happen? I'd do anything to make him better. If anybody else reads this who has had experience with this - I'd love some feedback.
Thanks.

My female had a brain tumor. She would have episodes where she would just space out and loose her way. She would end up very disoriented in a corner or she would walk in circles. We treated with prednisone and she was good for about 8 months before we had to send her to the bridge. I am sorry you are going thru this. Please know you all are in our prayers.

I do not have any experience with what you may be facing however I will say this.....
I know how hard the wait is when trying to find answers. What I have done in the past and have been successful with is calling the various facilities where I have had appointments. I would call first thing in the morning and tell them that I had an appointment (or Cami had one) on such and such day. I was calling to see if there had been any cancellations for THAT DAY or a day sooner than my originally scheduled appointment. I also would tell them that I would be calling in daily to check! I had about a 75% success record going that route. 3 out of 4 times I could get her in sooner than previously scheduled. When you call first thing in the AM you have a better chance at catching an opening that was canceled before they fill the spot. Another trick is to call just before they close and inquire about the following day. Last minute calls for the next days appointments will come in later in the day and you just might get lucky.
If nothing else it kept my brain busy and not focusing on being consumed with wait for I have very little patience when one of my babies needs something.

i'm so sorry about your boy :( we're going through a similar thing right now with our Tuff. his mri revealed infarcts in the brain which the neuro said may or may not be brain cancer. without doing a biopsy, they can't really rule it in or out, and i won't allow the biopsy due to risks involved. he also has had a stroke and has swelling on the brain in addition to spinal fluid leakage... so he has a few things going on. the vet and the neuro have come to the conclusion that the main battle here is likely either a glioma (brain tumor) or lymphoma, judging by how things have gone over the last few months. if you're interested, you can read our story under "lame hind legs."

i know exactly what you're going through and it's absolutely heartbreaking. try to keep your chin up until you have the mri done. the one thing i learned in this ordeal is that many neurological issues can exhibit the same clinical signs. so try to keep in mind that there's a chance Hoss could have something going on that's not as bad as you fear.
in the meantime, you just love your boy all that much harder. the time they have with us is never long enough, so we just love them with all we have while we have them :)

Thanks all for your responses so quickly. Lisa, I'm curious.... did your dog have consistent symptoms? Maybe it's just because I finally got him on meds (prednisone & tramadol for pain) but I haven't seen so much of the circling anymore. He just sleeps all the time (this was before the tramadol). He still stares off into space, doesn't greet us at all when we come home, hasn't done the lean into my legs like he ususally does when I'm giving him a good side scratch. I did take him for a short walk today just to get him out of the house and he seemed to do fine, but right back up on the bed and sleeping.
The worst was a few days ago when his whole body started shaking. He must have been in so much pain. I feel like such a bad "mommy" for not getting him started on something sooner. We took him in 3 weeks ago when his third eyelid was covering half of his eyeball, after a few nips when we tried to get him off the couch or bed, and him just acting so strange. He couldn't be bribed to move off the bed even with a peanut butter treat. I had to carry him out to the car. Well, he actually bit the vet tech on that visit, and was "quarantined". After x-raying everything except his head and blood work (including testing for Cushings) they couldn't find anything. He did spend the night there because of the bite, we have 2 small children at home, but we got him the next day because we felt we could better monitor his behavior at home where he was comfortable. The vet at that time told us it was most likely something neurological, possibly a brain tumor. So, he acted almost back to normal so we kinda thought, "oh, we'll just keep a good watch on him" but never 100% back to normal. Wouldn't follow me out to go on a walk out back off leash and up into the mountains, no greetings when we come home, no curiousity when a visitor comes over, etc.... but the shaking the other night is what has finally accelerated the concern and now we will do the MRI. Sorry for the long story.

TuffLove, could our stories be more similar? Hoss has had issued with his back leg for awhile now too. We were told to do the TPLO but since he seemed to regain mobility so quickly and still run around like a maniac, we decided it might not be the best thing (plus the cost pretty much put it out of reach for us). So I've been thinking this whole time maybe his leg was just giving him trouble. I thought it was strange though that he still is able to jump up on the beds & couches. He knows he's not allowed on our beds - he has his special chair in our playroom that he has claimed. That's fine - we've given it to him. He WILL NOT lay on his bed or his mat which is on the floor. He insisits on being on a bed or couch. I'm caving to him just because I want him to be comfortable. But I had been thinking it was just his leg but I did see his back legs kinda buckle about 2 weeks ago. I've also seen him "trip" going upstairs. I don't know what's going on. I'm just amazed at how much this boy is sleeping. One other symptom I've noticed is he seems to have trouble swallowing. Some days is quite drooly, then not so much other days. It's a mystery.

Has your vet confirmed that there's any slipping or excessive elasticity in his stiples at all? I'm just catching your story, so if you mentioned anything earlier and I missed it I'm sorry. For the longest time I was convinced that Tuff had a torn or partially torn acl after he came home with a limp one day (this was over a year ago now). I think reading all of the acl stories on here probably influenced my opinion a bit. You tend to get a little hypochondriatic reading all the horror stories in this forum lol. I was so baffled when the vet kept telling me his knees felt like they were in great shape. In hindsight, now we know that he has mild displaysia in one hip which likely caused the strange sitting positions we were seeing for so long. Of course, at the time I had no idea and just assumed what I was seeing with his back legs giving out was a result of some knee trauma. But even assuming that, it was strange because he wasn't in any pain.. which he definitely would have if he had a knee injury.

When his primary vet first examined him concerning the balance issues with the back legs, we had to rule out a bunch of things with xrays first. She did however, mention that his gait when he walked was a little narrow, which could point to neurological issues. That of course could have meant 1000 things at the time. The problem with neurological signs, like I said, is that many neurological problems can have similar symptoms that don't point to anything specific. So you're doing the right thing by getting the MRI :) At the very least, no matter what the outcome, you will have peace of mind to know that you did everything you could. You want to be treating the right ailment after all right? My husband and I are saving for a house right now, so TRUST ME, I know how hefty a blow those medical bills are as they add up. Our MRI was $1700 alone. Ugh. It hurts my wallet just thinking about it.

I'm curious, has Hoss ever shown any signs of aggression in the past? I'm only asking because if he hasn't it definitely sends up some red flags. Tuff has swelling of the brain (GME) and we were warned that it could bring out unexpected aggression (my poor sweet tuff!!! no way i thought!). He's never been aggressive a day in his life and hasn't been yet. He's on the Pred now and that's supposed to be reducing the swelling. Anyways, if he's never had any aggression like that, I would think maybe there's pressure caused by a lesion or swelling like with Tuff. I'm not a vet of course, I'm just rewinding my thoughts on what I discussed with our neuro.

Shoot.. just checked the time and I have to leave work. I'll have to get back to this a little later :)

Tuff Love, haven't been told anything else about his leg. They said his hips are fine, they just kept recommending TPLO for his left leg. He does sit in a way that, according to the vet, is a classic symptom of having a torn CCL. But like I said, the cost was kinda prohibitive for us to do the TPLO (our guy charges around $3800). Anyway... to answer your question about agressiveness. Hoss has never been aggressive. We have two little girls and he's always been so sweet with them and everybody. Just a typical playful fun loving boxer. I am obviously very concerned about his recent biting. I believe when he's done it, it's in response to pain I.E. the vet tech happened to be helping to hold him when the vet was prodding his head (I'd probably bite too!), and one time when my husband tried to get him off the couch by walking over to him and pulling (gently) on his collar. It's also kind of like he is defensive. When he's not sleeping, at times he seems almost paranoid. Like his eyes will get really wide and he's kinda jumpy. Ugh... Anyway, I really do appreciate yours and all the other postings. I like hearing the other stories and just trying to see if there are similarities. The other thing I have noticed too is that he's become really sloppy when he's eating. Kibble goes flying everywhere! I've started giving him 1/2 canned food & 1/2 dry because it seems easier for him to get down. And very slow lapping up water and seems extra messy too. I just don't know what all this adds up to. I'll definitely take Cami's advice and call first thing Monday morning and do my best to get him in sooner.

I bet Hoss being defensive and on his guard is just because he doesn't feel well. It's a natural instinct considering a wild dog would be at risk for attack by other dogs and animals in their weakened state.
Regrading the sloppy eating, Tuff was always kind of a sloppy eater, but he did start to show a classic sign of dog stroke, which is eating on one side of his bowl (among other things). I'm not sure if that can also be a symptom of other issues as well. I'm sure with any kind of neuro problem, coordination would be affected.
For us, we're not sure how much of his balance issues are a result of the stroke or a result of the other things going on, such as possible glioma or lymphoma.

Keep us posted and try to stay positive until you have some answers :)
*Sending some positive vibes and good luck for Hoss*
