Zoey has demodex and I am now giving her Ivermectin orally everyday. I tried the Mitoban dips and hated them. They stunk and I heard too many bad things about it. (It didn't slow Zoey down like the vet said it would though;) )
You don't need to separate your baby from the rest of the family. It's not contagious at all...to animals or people. If anything that might cause more stress to your baby and make the spots worse!
My vet (the one who prescribed the Ivermectin, not Mitoban) sends her cats to a holistic vet and they told her to give them Colostrum to help boost their immune systems. It comes in capsule form and I just sprinkle it on her food.
Good luck! If you need help there are plenty of us that are dealing with those nasty mites!! :)

Neuter????

Should he be neutered from this there is a chance of passing it on right???the mange is too widespread if the vet has prescribed mitaban and this is his second case.. so is neutering the best way to go???

Definitely he should be neutered (put another way, he must NOT ever be bred irrespective of whether you neuter or not).

No dog that has ever had generalised mange or required treatment for localised mange should ever be used for breeding. In the former case, you know the animal has a defective immune system that any offspring are likely to inherit (an immune system being required for a heck of a lot more than just battling mange). And in the latter case, you don't know if the dog had a normal immune system - because treatment was given without finding out if the dog was capable of recovery all on their own. In both cases, these animals cannot ever be bred.

In short, yes you should have your dog neutered. However, you should wait until he is fully recovered from the mange. As noted several times already, demodectic mange is an immune system problem. Thus, the dog should not be given any serious hits to the immune system - as a surgery would be - until after the mange is well under control.

yea we were waiting till it is cleared from his system to see if he should be being this is his second outbreak and we have him on the canidae diet hopefully this will help some with his immune system problem

mitaban

I was also prescribed mitaban for mable and she underwent four treatments. I had no idea that it was so bad. I would be interested in learning more about this

Just use the search engine. There are hundreds of threads about mitaban on these forums, and the experiences of those who've used it.

You might want to think about adding some Missing Link or other form of vitamins to his food.
Again, if you do a search or look around in the feeding forum, you can see what others have added to their babies' food.
Morgan had mange also...don't forget - if you do the Mitaban dips and do NOT boost his/her immune system, it's all for nothing.
You HAVE to get your baby healthy from the inside in order to keep the mites at a healthy level.
We fed Chicken Soup, used Goodwinol (a lotion-type medicine), added Missing Link to her food and also fed her yummy and healthy treats like apples, oranges, banannas, etc. based on the advice I learned here on Boxerworld. If I hadn't listened to the Mods and other members on this, I would have dipped my baby 3 times (that's what the vet wanted) and spend over $600.00 (money is not an option here) and all I needed to do was get her immune system up. Within 2 weeks we had a negative scratch test...it was definitely worth it.
Good luck!
