Yes, the needle is quite large, but it isn't *that* large. I've had five pets microchipped, and not one of them has had so much as a local anasthetic. I've never had a vet suggest it either. Each one of them has visibly flinched as the needle was inserted, but not yelped. And it takes about 20 seconds to complete the procedure.

Frankly, there is *no way in the world* I would put an animal through all of the risks of anasthetic for the sake of a big injection. Anasthetic is *never* risk-free - not for people, and not for pets. I find it astounding that a vet would recommend that.

If your pet has a surgery, such as neutering, coming up anyway then there's no harm in waiting and having the microchipping done at the same time. But the idea of putting an animal under anasthetic just for a needle is, IMO, both ridiculous and taking unneccessary risks with the animals health.

Both my boys are microchipped and it was done while they were wide awake. I can not say that they didn't feel it but if the person microchipping knows what they are doing it can be done as quick and painlessly as possible.

We have had both Snoop and Dottie microchipped. Yes it DOES hurt!
But not something you would knock your dog out for.
It only takes seconds. Not like when WE have to have a needle, for drawing blood. This is quick. Our guys flinched, but didn't actually cry.
It was a choice between the chip, or a tattoo.
I have a tattoo. I know how much THAT hurt! Thus, we decided on the chip.
If your dog were ever lost, you would be very thankful you had him microchipped.

i agree with courtney323 in regard to the neutering of your dog as soon as possible. the ear cropping is purely cosmetic and neither decreases nor increases your dog's physical health but neutering him as early as possible will help give him the optimal health he can have.
i had my dog microchipped at 11 weeks of age and our vet did it right in the examination room. he did not use any form of anisthetic and apollo acted like he does for a vaccination, which is like nothing happened. i'd try going to another vet.
i've even heard of some veterinarians spaying and neutering dogs at the early ages of 8-12 weeks.

i forgot to mention, my vet considersw chipping to be such a minor procedure, you are not required to make an appointment. they tell you just drop by anytime we're open and we'll do it right away for you.

karon, whose dogs are always chipped.
