Yes, the needle is quite large, but it isn't *that* large. I've had five pets microchipped, and not one of them has had so much as a local anasthetic. I've never had a vet suggest it either. Each one of them has visibly flinched as the needle was inserted, but not yelped. And it takes about 20 seconds to complete the procedure.
Frankly, there is *no way in the world* I would put an animal through all of the risks of anasthetic for the sake of a big injection. Anasthetic is *never* risk-free - not for people, and not for pets. I find it astounding that a vet would recommend that.
If your pet has a surgery, such as neutering, coming up anyway then there's no harm in waiting and having the microchipping done at the same time. But the idea of putting an animal under anasthetic just for a needle is, IMO, both ridiculous and taking unneccessary risks with the animals health.
