Our Vet recommended that we should feed our Sadie "Medi-Cal" Developmental kibble. We have been doing so without any problems but comparing the ingredients with the recomendations found on this site, it does not sound like a good quality food. I'm going to look for "Chicken Soup" and make the change. Has any one out there heard of, or use Medi-Cal?

I actually have not heard of this kibble, however I found their website.

Medi Cal (Developmental) Ingredients:

Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Oat Flour, Corn, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary Extract, Citric Acid and Lecithin), Dried Whole Egg, Fish Meal, Yeast Culture, Beet Pulp, Cranberry Meal, Tomato Pomace, Flax Meal, Chicken Digest, Minerals (Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Monosodium Phosphate, Zinc Oxide, Zinc Bioplex, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Bioplex, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Copper Bioplex, Calcium Iodate and Organic Selenium), Fructo-Oligosaccharides, Taurine, DL-Methionine, L-Lysine, Vitamins (Choline Chloride, Vitamin E, Inositol, Ascorbic Acid, Niacin, Ascorbyl Polyphosphate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Beta-Carotene, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin A, Folic Acid, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, Biotin, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3), Bacillus Subtilis Dried Fermentation Extract, L-Carnitine, L-Glutamine, Docosahexaenoic Acid and Alpha-Lipoic Acid.

I think it's great that you find this food suspect ;) I don't like that there is only one protein source in the top 5 ingredients. It also seems heavy in grains and corn is the 4th ingredient. I would be looking to switch her to a better quality food, if I were you. I'm curious as to why the vet is recommending a specific diet -- is she having problems of some sort?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I think the reason why my Vet may have recommended this food is because they sell it, and it is only sold by Vets. I've never seen it in any stores. I know it sounds like they are just trying to make a buck, but other than this, they provide a great vet service.
Thanks again.

I have fed it and so has my MIL. We no longer feed it. It was OK, did not create any problems but the ingrediants aren't great. I now feed Solid Gold Hund n' Flucken and have fed Natural Balance products. Since you are in Ontario - do you have Pet Valu in Ottawa? That is were I have found those brands. There are many Pet Valu's in southwestern Ontario.

Funny - we're in Southern Ontario too - the first vet we went to sounded like she hadn't heard of Canidae, and once she heard it was an all life stages food, recommended the top 4 brands available in Canada - Science Diet, Eukanuba, Royal Canin or Medi-cal, the last of which they sell there of course. We switched because when she spoke to us, she talked 'at' us instead of 'to' us.. sounded like a recording of something from a textbook.

Switched to the vet I used to go to with my Parents. She asked the same about the food, and then recommended the Medi-Cal developmental.. but she knows me, and didn't try to push it too much. She also sells Medi-Cal. I didn't feel like getting into the whole debate about the ingredients.

I chose Canidae after doing a lot of research on here. I'm temped to mix things up, and switch between Canidae and Wellness.

The breeder was feeding a mixture of Shur-Gain, Techni-Cal and Nutro Natural Choice.

I think I am going to try the solid gold brand for SADIE. It is available at my local pet store. I'm going to wait a couple of weeks to change her over to the new food, because she has developed a Urinary infection and is now on some meds. Thanks again for the interest.

i had a Keeshond that was eating Medi-cal. It was recommend by our vet as well because of his diabetes.
I have a boxer now, and I was giving him Iams, which was recommended by the breeder. I have had second thoughts about it after reading some of the comments in this forum last night. I went today to try to get something different at our local pet shop, but the only thing I could get that was any different was Techni-cal. Any comments on this brand?
He has got a very dry coat and is shedding a lot. A few have mentioned changing his diet.....\

I have been feeding my Molly solid Gold Dry and medi - cal wet. I guess giving her a good dry doesn't make up for a bad wet. I think it is time for us to change. Anyone know of any good wet foods?

MyboyJackson: Techni-cal is sold at pet stores, not a great food :( sorry. Medi-cal is sold at veterinary clinics only - not a good food either. A good dry food that I previously used is Natural Balance - my dogs loved it and thrived on it. For dry coat and shedding youmight want to start adding in some oils with the food. Salmon & Fish Oil caps, vitamin e, flaxseed oil to name a few - they will help to make a great difference. I've heard Canidae is a really good food, although harder to find in Canada. Wellness was okay, my dogs never really liked it too much. Good luck.

Techni-Cal Adult:
Chicken meal, ground corn, ground rice, ground wheat - too much grain, not enough meat. chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E, and citric acid), chicken, beet pulp, whole dried egg, flaxseed, natural flavour, sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, biotin, dl-methionine, vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, vitamin C, inositol, d-calcium
