Mast Cell Tumor and ACL Tear

Hi - I've read quite a lot in the forums about both these topics, but I wanted to get some advice about our specific situation. Our dog Tess who is 3 1/2, had two small tumors on the inside of her right leg that looked like blood blisters. Our normal Vet, Vet A told us not to worry about them unless they burst and became a problem. They were on the surface of the skin. I was working at a horse ranch, and the horse vet out there saw them and told me to get them removed immediately. I then took Tess to another Vet who we will refer to as Vet B. Vet B removed the tumors and told us that they were level 1 tumors and that they got everything and not to worry.

Tess is a very active dog, and loves to run flat out. We take her to the park and she loves to chase a ball and she loves to swim. I had her at the park a week ago, and she acted normal the whole time. Once we got home, she laid on the couch and when she stood up, she refused to put any weight on her back left leg. This had happened about a month before also, but after a couple of hours she went back to normal. This wasn't the case this time. She favored it all that night. Now, my best friend is a Vet Tech who works for Vet A. He was over for the World Series that night, and Tess was clearly in pain. He checked her out and thought it best to get her into a vet if she continued to act that way. Over the next two days it didn't get any better, so I took her to Vet B.

That morning I had found a small marble size tumor on her chest. It isn't attached to anything, and seems to be free floating. I told Vet B about it. After testing with a needle, they told me it was a Mast Cell Tumor and that it should be removed. I agreed. As far as the leg was concerned, they couldn't tell what was up, so they wanted to put her out and do X-Rays. They told me that if something was wrong with the ACL, then there would need to be a second surgery to repair it. They also wanted to remove the mast cell tumor.

I thought that there should be other ways of telling what was wrong with her leg besides surgery. I wasn't really excited about putting her out twice for the same thing. I wanted to get a second opinion, so I took her to my normal Vet, Vet A. He put her on the table, and determined that she had an ACL tear that wasn't completely torn. He tested the tumor and said it was a Mast Cell Tumor. He then suggested that I go to another vet, a specialist in ACL work and have her do the surgery on the ACL and remove the mast cell tumor at the same time. This morning we went in to Vet A for blood work to see what we can find out about how aggressive the tumor is. There is only one tumor, so he thinks it's no big deal. Get it removed, keep her on Benadryl long term and hope for the best. He believes surgery is the best way to go. Since he gave her a shot and we started her on Rimadyl, she isn't favoring the leg as much. She walks a lot better, but when she sits, she puts her left leg out a bit.

Tess means the world to us. She was in our wedding, and she is terrific with our triplet boys who are 17 months old. I want to do the right thing. I don't mind paying for the ACL surgery, I just want to make sure it's the best avenue for her being healthy in the long run. Sorry this post is so long, but I thought it would be best to explain in as much detail as possible. Any opinions you have would be greatly appreciated.

We just got back from the Ortho. Vet ourselves for the same reason...partial ACL tear. We tried conservative treatment at first. Two weeks of rest with only leash walks and NO running/jumping. To look at Fenix, you would never know he has that partial tear! He runs around like a maniac most of the time. But after a day at daycare or running with another dog, that leg is stiff and he favors it. We have decided to do the TPLO surgery in a few weeks. From the research I have done, it appears to be the best route! I am terrified, but I now it is best for him. Good luck in whatever you decide.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this with Tess. I don't have any experience on tumors and I hope to never have to, but I do have some experience on the torn ACL.

Charlie tore is ACL in his left leg and he would not put any weight on it at all, he might as well have been a three legged dog. At first we just thought he had sprained something and so we just made him rest over the weekend and the following week, but he was still very much favoring his leg, no weight on it if he didn't have to. So I took him into the vet. We put him on Rimadyl and he was on total lock down, no jumping no running no playing. he started to do much better and after two weeks he was back to normal. It took him a total of about 3 weeks to totally heal, but he did not have any surgery done.

I hope all goes well for you guys and Tess. Lots of healing and good vibes headed your way!

The Vet just called. Tess' blood work came back completely normal. This is a good sign. Now to make a decision about this ACL.

Well, I'm completely torn on what to do. We have been keeping her inside and haven't been letting her jump or run around. She isn't favoring the leg near as much. My vet thinks that surgery is the only way to go. I'm not convinced. She is having surgery to remove the lump, and they could do the ACL at the same time, but I'm just not sure it's necessary.

There was recently someone else who had a question about the ACL repair This thread has a lot of good info:

Personally, if she is already doing better with no activity (conservative management) I would continue doing that a little longer - no rush to have surgery done. Take your time to research all the different options. *Most* vets will tell you surgery is the only way to go, which is not true. If she doesn't get better or gets worse you can always reconsider surgery.

I would hold off too. We have actually waited about a year and a half to do the surgery. Like I mentioned earlier, most of the time Fenix will run around like crazy on that leg and act like nothing ever happened. It just happens that it seems to be slowly getting worse. I would not rush into surgery if she is getting better or seek the opinion of an Orthopedic Surgeon. Again, good luck.

Like people, dogs heal at their own pace. I am lucky to have a vet (well 2) that are not sugery happy. I would let her heal on her own for a while longer. She is already getting better and thats a good sign. Charlie took 3 weeks before he was walking normally. I didn't let him play hard for another 2 weeks after that. And even though Charlie is fairly mellow..... it is still very difficult to keep a boxer calm and not running around crazy. And I still watch him (I'm a worry wart) but he is completely healed and perfectly fine in that leg now Vet even told me to stop worrying about it LOL

Hey Everybody,

Thank you so much for your opinion. My wife and I are really leaning the non-surgery route. After a few days on Rimadyl and restricting her activity, she isn't even favoring the leg anymore. I'm going to continue this for a while and wait. Like you say, we can always do the surgery.

In other news, after having her on Benadryl for the last four days, the tumor has reduced in size by almost half. We are going to have that removed no matter what. Thanks again for all of your opinions. I will let everyone know how things turn out.
