Mason - Short but Long

In comparing Mason to Riley (both in pictures and side by side) I noticed one thing that differs greatly between the two. Riley is very tall and seems to have good body length in comparison. Mason is much shorter than Riley, but his length is already almost the same (going by visual comparison).

Mason is now almost 6 months old so I'm wondering if he's going to stay short and long or if his height will catch up eventually. I don't see him getting as tall as Riley. It really doesn't matter to me how short or tall he is when he's full grown. I just want him to be happy and healthy which as of right now, he is. I'm just curious to see if this is fairly normal with some puppies. If it will help to have exact measurements, I can try to get them tomorrow.

Also, out of curiousity, I know that there is a standard height for a boxer, but is there a standard length as well??

Yes, the standard says the length should equal the height.

Height--Adult males 22½ to 25 inches; females 21 to 23½ inches at the withers, preferably, males should not be under the minimum nor females over the maximum: however, proper balance and quality in the individual should be of primary importance since there is no size disqualification. Proportion--The body in profile is of square proportion in that a horizontal line from the front of the forechest to the rear projection of the upper thigh should equal the length of a vertical line dropped from the top of the withers to the ground.

I think Mason probably has lots of growing to do. They don't usually reach their full height until they are about a year old. Most dogs don't grow evenly, so you are not going to know what his final proportions are going to be until he stops growing.

All you can do is wait and see.

The thing is, that Mason is only my 2nd boxer. I only have Riley to compare to things to first hand. With Riley, he seemed to grow both height and length equally so nothing really seemed to be odd. Mason though is as I've stated longer and shorter. It's just kind of weird that they're following different growing patterns.

Like I sai dthough, I really don't care how big or how small Mason is when all is said and done. The only thing that I really care about is his happiness and health. I was just curious so I figured I'd ask.

I've had dogs that grow very proportionately like you say Riley did. Unfortunately, many boxers grow longways, then up, then longways, then the neck sprouts, then the legs shoot up... you get the picture.

That's why people say to take a good look at 8 weeks, then not look for a year

If you have a picture at 7-8 weeks, that's as good a guess as any to what his final overall proportions will look like.

Since last posting this, I've noticed a little bit of growth in the height department. Mason is getting taller, slowly but surely. Actually, slowly is a good thing so I'm happy about that.

Mason now also has a lot of extra skin. I'm assuming that he's about to go through yet another growth spurt!! I wonder which way he'll go this time.
