The meaning of Deeg

Julie I got a response from the girl who named your baby. Here it is. Hope this is not viewed as too long since I've seen longer. Wow look at the history behind your boys name Julie.

Hi Leilani:
Joni forwarded your message to me. I pick up the boxers from the San Bernardino area. The short answer is that Deeg is named for a town in India. The long answer is:

Royal Rajasthan was the stuff of a period romance - princesses and palaces, tigers and shikars, plundered wealth and wanton extravagance, tales of valor, sacrifice and deathless love. The treasures of the kingdom still remain to enchant the wide-eyed tourist.
Deeg was the idyllic retreat of the martial Jat chieftains of Bharatpur. This is where they dallied with their mistresses, indulged their sybaritic fantasies and built some of the country's most beautiful palaces. Today, Deeg is a sleepy little town, but most of the palaces are in an excellent state of repair. The erstwhile royalty of Bharatpur occupied the palaces until the 1970's. In fact, the palaces still contain some of their original furnishings and some are even looked after by the occasional old family retainer.

The palaces were set in extravagantly laid Mogul gardens with placid pools and fountains. There are richly carved cornices, pavilions and eaves. The rooms are filled with trophies collected from Jat adventures in Delhi and Agra. It is said that Raja Suraj Mal actually carried home an entire marble building from Delhi. Much of the inlaid marble here was plundered from Mogul palaces. Gopal Bhavan, completed in 1750 by Raja Suraj Mal, has a marble swing believed to have belonged to emperor Jehangir's queen - the Persian beauty, Noor Jehan. An interesting anecdote is attached to a marble statue of an Englishwoman dressed in a nautch girl's garb. She is said to have been a reigning beauty at the court of Raja Kishen Singh. Though English, she conformed to the Rajputana tradition of sati when the Raja died. The palaces are filled with fascinating articles and features, each with a colorful story of its own.

Deeg, just 39 kms from Krishna's Vrindavan, is also the place where the dark god's gopis (milkmaids) had their skirts embroidered. Their frolic is the subject of a large repertoire of erotic art and literature. Deeg has an interesting bazaar, peopled by tall good-looking Jat farmers in pristine white turbans and dhotis (an unstitched garment wrapped loosely at the waist) and brightly dressed women in swinging skirts. For this farming community, tractors are the main mode of transport, and they trundle along the roads, packed with people going off for a fair or a wedding.

Makes a nice change of pace from the usual parade of Rockys and Tysons.

Cheers,
Leslie

Mr. Sabian Deeg

Thanks Leilani, Thank you for reminding me about my "naming my boxer" post! The story about Deeg's name is so romantic and cool. I am glad you found out what it means for me. I took a copy of it to show everyone who has met Deeg.. I loved it!

We are still having a very difficult time with his name. Part of my friends cannot remember it, the other half say it with a lack of confidence and look at me with a..."Did I say it right?" look. So, I am working on calling him Sabian. Not to confuse him, I call him "Sabian Deeg." When I say Sabian he wags his nubbin and gets excited. It is a good name to baby talk to him. So now, until Deeg knows Sabian…he is Sabian Deeg. I hope it works.

Thank you very much, Boxer Pals, for your wonderful posts! I’ve never had to deal with a name change before.

With Boxer Love,
Julie, Magic and "Sabian" Deeg

Changing names

A name change should go pretty easy. A friend just adopted an Austrailian(sp?) Shephard from a rescue, The name change went VERY well. The names were not even close ( Scotch to Graham ) Graham knows his name, and answers to it every time!

The name thing again..."oh, hum...sigh"

I took the big step and told my family and friends that Deeg's name was going to be changed to Sabien....Big Mistake...I got “booed” over that name also. So, I said "Forget it! I like Deeg and it is going to stay Deeg!" Now that I put my foot down, so to speak, my family and friends are getting use to Deeg’s name and saying it correctly. I think I learned something over this name-changing thing. Do not worry about what your family or friends say…if you like it, then that should be enough. LOL, I am glad that I lived through this little episode.

Interesting !!!! I am from India and spent all my life there (until 6 years ago---thats when I moved to Texas), but didnot know about this small sleepy town called Deeg.
Since it is an Indian name ----Deeg must be pronounced with the soft "D"----and most Westerners I know cannot say the soft "D". This "D" is said with your tongue touching the top part of your first two front teeth.

catcompany, thanks for your post. I tried to practice the soft "D"; it's hard. His name often times sounds like "Dig" when we call him. I also, get the funniest looks when people ask me for the first time what his name is. It seems that no one in my area has ever heard his name, Deeg. At least it is different! Thanks again.
