lump on her head

Hi everyone.

Before I start this question, I just wanted to let you know I do have an appointment for her to see the vet.

I noticed about a week ago a little lump on Kia's head...it was really small and you could only feel it when you rubbed her head. In the last week the lump (which kind of looks like a wart) has gotten about as big as an pencil eraser. Sometimes it is red, and sometimes it is not. I called the vet today and all they said was to make an appointment. Which was done, but untill I can get her to her appointment does anyone know what this could be? Or even why she has it? Kia is 2 yrs old and she is my baby girl so I am trying to find out all I can. Please point me in the right direction if you know anything that may help.

It just may be a histiocytoma that will eventually disappear on its own. It is usually treated with a little betadine, but some vets still insist on removing them. Good luck, and do let us know what transpires ~ Cathy

Sounds like a histiocytoma, especially if it looks like a pencil eraser. Definitely have the vet check it out, and do a needle aspiration if the vet seems concerned. They're harmless and usually they will go away within a couple of months. You can put iodine (they sell clear versions) or wart remover on it, and some people claim this speeds the going away process, but I've never bothered.

Assuming the needle aspiration comes back normal, I only remove them if they start to get larger and are on a place with minimal skin (a toe, for example).

Mast cell tumors can look like anything, so needle aspiration can help provide clues. However, after removing a half dozen of these things over the years that were completely benign, I'm a bit more leery of surgically removing them and subjecting the dog to the anesthesia right off the bat.

Update

I took her to the vet today. He thinks it could be a cancerous tumor so it will be removed on the 19th. I like the vet, but I hate to wait so long for an appointment. Kia has been to a couple differents vet since I got her, and he is the only one she will let near her. I am not sure why. He is also going to spay her at the sametime, because he thinks she has a problem with her uteris (sry 4 the bad spelling). I am so scared. She is my baby girl and I don't want to lose her. I know it is an easy thing to remove, but I am still scared, my boxers are the best children I have ever had (except my 2 boys LOL). I will let you know what happens with her.

Any surgery on our babies is scary. It is so hard to wait when I'm sure you want it done and over with. I'm sure she will do fine. Keep us posted and you'll be in mythoughts and prayers

Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers and good vibes!!! She had the lump removed and she was spayed at the same time. She laid around the house for about three days, but my BABY GIRL is back to her normal self. we went to the vet today to have the stitches removed from her spay, the stitches on her head will fall out on their own. Now I just have to get rocky fixed! That will happen sometime in March.
