Hi guys. Something very unfortunate happened to my 12 week old puppy last Friday night and I'm hoping someone will have some advice for me on how to handle it. My puppy got his 12 week booster shot and a light sedative to help take the tape off his ears. He was fine when we got home. But about an hour later I noticed he was lethargic and his gums were pale. I called the vet and she said not to worry, he was probably sleeping off the sedative. I called back an hour later and she said the same thing so we all went to sleep. Five hours later I woke up and he was dead. I understand now that although it's not common, a puppy can have an allergic reaction to a shot and all it needs is epinephrine and its ok. I am soooooo angry at this vet that because of her laziness this adorable puppy had to needlessly die. I'm angry and I'm truly brokenhearted, I haven't been able to sleep since then. My question is: what is the vet's responsibility? My husband want's to sue them but I'd rather not, but I do want them to pay for this mistake so maybe next time she's confronted with the same situation, she'll get off her fat butt and do something. Also, I'm desparate to get another puppy as soon as possible to help me get out of this depression. Does anybody know of puppies available not too far from Rockland County in New York. Would really appreciate any suggesions and/or advice.

I am so sorry to hear that you and your poor puppy had to go through that. about suing the vet, most places make you sign a waiver saying that if anything happens to you pets it is not the vets responsibility, did you sign one of those??? I hope you find a loving puppy and know that all dogs go to heaven.

First, let me say how truly sorry I am about your puppies loss. It it so heartbreaking. Do you know if the sedative your vet used was ACE? ACE, short for acepromazine is a sedative used pre-surgically that can be fatal to boxers. My old vet, who was very "old school" did not now about this and I had to insist that they did not use this on Layla for her spay. I really don't have anything more to offer except heartfelt condolences.

In response to Rico's mama, Friday was his first time at the vet and I know after I filled out his information, I did sign something, but honestly, I don't know what it was, if it was that release you mentioned. And in response to Layla's mom, I know about the ace and I did mention to my vet not to use it and he didn't. Thank you so much for your condolences.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy!! I cant even begin to imagine what you are going through.

When you mentioned to the vet that the puppy's gums were pale, she should have told you to get him in right away!!

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart just broke reading your post.

I'm curious as to what the vet said to you when told your puppy died. Did she say anything at all? Have any explanation or "excuse?"

I too am concerned that when told the dog had lost color in his gums she didn't react and at least advise you to take the pup to an emergency clinic, if she wasn't prepared to deal with it. Pale or white gums is a very dangerous sign in a dog and she should have known that.

I don't know about the lawsuit and whether or not you signed a waiver or not. You'd have to have your husband or lawyer research that for you.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart is with you at this tragic time.

I am so sorry for you....bless your heart and your family as well! I know you are feeling such mixed emotions of sadness and anger at the same time.....The only advice i can give is to call a lawyer and at least see the channels you can go through...surely there is a state board of some kind you can file a complaint with....While it will not bring your baby back, it will hopefully prevent another tragedy!! I would also get the word out about that vet....bad/negative feedback can be extremely detrimental and it sounds like she is not the most knowlegeable of vets! I am clueless as to getting another puppy....sounds like you have lots of love to give!!! Good luck and i am so sorry again for your loss!!

I am so very sorry for your loss. I would strongly recommend you follow your husbands lead but also talk to the vet office first. Ask flat out why you weren't advised of the seriousness of the symptoms exhibited by your pup. Document all the details while they are still fresh on your mind as well as any explanations the vet gives for this negligence. This is more than just $, but a way to make sure this vet does not make the same mistake again causing this pain for another family. I really wish I had more to offer, please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
