Looking for a puppy

Let me also put in my two cents for the love of a rescued boxer. We've had Hershey for almost 6 months now and he has been an absolute LOVE! He is sweet and loving and calm and APPRECIATIVE! All I know if his background is that he was used for breeding and turned in to rescue with two other yardmates. We believe, based on his behavior, that he was neglected, but not abused. He is very attached to me, and very cautious around my husband. By "cautious" I mean he looks to him for approval and is very aware of his actions and his behavior. We assume he was pretty stong handed by a man. When my husband speaks, he moves!! (usually goes running to his crate). He is absolutely wonderfull with my kids...very gentle and patient. He is everything good in a boxer. lovicon lovicon

Amen! Rescue boxers look for approval all the time. They are, in my opinion much easier to train also.

Untrue - the majority of Boxers we get in Rescue are owner surrenders that have nothing to do with abuse. Many people have life changes such a divorce or being forced to move. Others did not research the breed enough and were not prepared for what a handful an immature Boxer can be.

Rescue is great because you are allowed to skip such things as house breaking. And a good rescue org. will have a good understanding of the type of Boxer they are placing and screen homes appropriately.

Thanks all for helping me realize that maybe a rescued dog maybe right for me. I got a boxer magazine today with an article saying that boxers have more love the second time around. The reason I would rather have a dog from a puppy is that I was attacked by my ex's dog (21 stitches to the face) 2 years ago and he came from a pet store at 6 months old. Perhaps I will find the right dog from a rescue (if I ever hear back from them :( ).

Just a question to ask yourself. Why are you getting the puppy/dog? If you are looking solely for a pet/companion then rescuing an existing dog is a wonderful option. But if you're interested in showing conformation and/or breeding you need to work with an experienced and responsible breeder so you're improving the breed.

No, I won't be showing. I just want a pet. I've had dogs all of my life and now that I am settled in a new house I'm ready to get one.

:( I'm sorry to hear about your previous unpleasant experience. This site has great people and loads of information, so you've come to the right spot to learn about the boxer! The boxers I have known are very loving, happy, ACTIVE, and protective dogs. Puppies are cute but a lot of work. Rescue dogs just want to be loved and accepted, it seems. Whichever you choose, I hope it is the best for you and the dog. Good luck and I look forward to hearing your success stories. :D

I got one!!!

I finally found a puppy! I am the new mom of a 3 month old white male boxer named Sid. Unfortuantly, we found out the day after we got him that he is deaf. We were already attached to him, so we have decided to keep him. He is very well behaved. Housebreaking is going okay. He is such a smart little boy!
