Another perspective...

I'm a bit behind on this thread...

But I wanted to mention- my girl was VERY attached to me and had separation anxiety. I did lots of training, hired a walker, video taped her, etc... it wasn't until we did get another dog (though we got an adult rescue, not a puppy) that we saw a huge difference in her SA.

She recently passed, and while our other dog doesn't have SA, we can see a difference in his behavior (he's not misbehaving- just how he interacts with us) and plan to get a second dog. I have definitely seen a lot of benefits to having 2 together. :)

I don't disagree with this, but you have to have the time for one before you can have time for two, which I think is the point most of us were trying to make on this thread.

My sister has two labs and i was always under the impression that it helped with their separation anxiety, but my mother keeps telling me things the dogs will do if my sister has to work late or doesn't come home on time. Now I can't be certain that the separation anxiety wouldn't be worse if the two dogs didn't have each other. I still have to assume two dogs with each other that play and get along would be better than one by themselves.

I do believe Roxy has separation anxiety with me, but I've seen worse. My mother's dog growing up would not leave my mother's foot steps no matter where my mother was. If I ever needed to find my mother all I had to do is look for the dog or listen to the noise of her tags. Roxy does follow me around a lot at certain times, but I've seen her go into another room where there's a comfortable place that she likes to lay down on. She can be there, maybe because she's sleeping for the most part without me.

I've seen some natural remedies for separation anxiety that I might try out and I hear a lot of people go on and on about DAP, either the plugin or the collar.
