how do I treat constant licking of red spots?

Sugar Mama, a 22 week-old beauty has been licking on one particular spot of her front leg. I've noticed that it's become a bit red and her hair has thinned also. In addition she has a small red spot on her neck where she tends to scratch with her hind paw. No apparent oozing or tenderness when I examine the areas. A friend of mine mentioned using Sulfodene. Will this help relieve or eliminate the itch and allow the areas to heal? How about the hair growth, will that improve once she heals?

Being that I'm a new "Mommy" I tend to rush her to the vet for every little thing. But that's gotten expensive, so I guess I need to learn to not over react in every situation.

My husband and I were critisized by the receptionist at our vet's office for babying Sugar Ray. She told us that we didn't have to question every little thing that goes on with him. Well, when he ended up sick last week I am embarrassed to say that I heard her voice in my head and thought, "ok, we could wait this out a bit," then when he was vomiting for 4 days we finally had no choice but to take him to the hospital. Needless to say his intestines were collapsed due to him eating my drawstring and $5,000 later he is finally home resting peacefully. I know it gets expensive and I wish I could offer advice on the licking (I'm still new to all this myself hense the rushing to the vets) but hopefully a visit to the vet may not only calm your worries but there may be an even bigger bill in the end if you wait to long. Sugar Ray ended up having a 3 hour surgery at which point, halfway through, the vet called and asked if we wanted to put him down due to the amount money it was going to cost. Sometimes I wonder about the bedside manner. Good luck with Sugar Mama

It's good to know someone can relate to the anxiety felt when your beloved "child" is not him/herself.

What a terrible ordeal Sugar Ray and his parents experienced! Hopefully you are all in good health and spirits today. And I pray, that in the future, you are able to find a true animal lover (Vet) who will treat your "family member" like one of his/her own.

Fortunately, my vet has praised me on my willingness to bring Sugar in for all the "little" things,as well as the necessary treaments/visits. Our doctor kindly listens to all my questions and concerns, then takes the time to inform and educate me on several issues. I'm very grateful to him and his staff.

It probably is best that I take Sugar Mama in to be looked at...besides, she does love visiting with the staff members when we're there. Everyone receives a personal hug & licks (1 for the women and 3 for the men). She's a little flirt!

Sounds like a staph infection. Hugo gets one on his tummy when he licks too much. It looks like a quarter-sized dark rusty red spot. The vet told us to put hydrocortizone (sp) creme on it, with bitter apple to keep him from messing with it. That usually works for us.
