Leg lifting

Will Rooney, my 10 month old male, start lifting his leg or is he always gonna go like a female?

Samson will be 2 in a couple of months, and he rarely lifts his leg. Occasionally, he will hold it halfway up and we were suprised to see him even do that!!

Rooney might get it. Some dogs never do though. I had a male golden that never once in his 4 years of life lifted his leg.

Maxx will be a year old next month, and he's still not lifting his leg yet. I'm beginning to wonder if he ever will. :rolleyes:

I always thought that the lifting of the leg was a marking thing. The higher the leg - the higher up the pee to cover all the other markings. So in otherwards - a dominance kind of thing. Our Boxer Topper thought he was king of all dogs - marked high and pretty much any tree, shrub and stump in sight. Charlie started lifting pretty early - about 5 months and I worried. Since the neuter though he's not marking nearly as much and its hit or miss whether he lifts a leg - basically it's all about getting it out and not hitting every tree he sees. Though that could have somethng to do with the fact that it's pretty darn cold here!

I asked this same question a couple of months ago. he was around a year old well he has done it. and wish he never started. now he pees on things he should not.(like the other dogs) which we are working on. I still remember the day he started I was so excited. so don't worry one day he will start. also samson still squats too.

He's not "going like a female" - he's going like a dog. Not all males lift their legs. You really don't want them to! Leg-lifting is marking behavior, not bladder relief behavior. With it you may also get marking furniture, marking walls, marking at other people's houses, marking other dogs, marking every little bush and every tree and stump and hydrant and clump of grass on walks, and never fully emptying their bladders as their instincts will be to "keep" some pee for marking... who needs all that, just so the human on the other end of the leash can feel masculine during the twenty seconds a dog is peeing? I hope my Guinness never starts leg-lifting and all the unwanted behaviors that often accompany it.

A dog will do whatever comes natural to him. Some will lift, some won't. Some will do so more than others, earlier, later, etc. Whatever Demps does and whatever is natural to him, I don't care. I'll love him either way. With his natural behaviors. If they bring about unwanted "human" behavior then you just have to work with them. But please accept whatever they do and love them the same.

I hope Lance doesn't start that actually and that's why we are going to alter him as soon as it's ok to do so. However, on a funny note, now that the ground is frozen here, when Lance does tinkle, especially in the morning after holding it all night, he can now hear it hit the ground and sometimes turns around to look and see what that "noise" is..ah ha ha it's pretty funny because then he looks at me like I'm doing it.

Nismo has only lifted his leg once and he barely moved it up and got pee on it. So now if he feels it start to touch his legs he'll try to run away from it.
