Leg lifting

I have two boxers, littermates. Frasier lifted at about 9 mos., Ali didn't start until about 1 year old. It depends on the dog and most importantly his target. Both of my dogs will revert to squatting if they have no vertical target; they don't just pee into thin air.

That's Cosworth. Of course when he has a vertical target he aims as high as he can. He actually pees upward on to trees and posts. Of course this means when he's excited, which is often, he sometimes misses sending a stream of urine on a ballastic arc about 15 feet long.

Good thing the girl walking past the telephone pole he almost peed on thought it was "cute".... ;)

This thread remonds me of my Brother-in-law, he has a Rotty that is now about 5 years old but when he was a puppy (around 8 months) he refused to lift his leg my BIL thought that he was a "sissy" so he decided that he was gonna teach him how it was done......every time he took Rodney out he he (my BIL) would run to a tree or fence and lift his leg to show Rodney how to do it. I do not think I have ever laughed so hard in my life. He continued to do this for more than a month, the neighbors thought that he was crazy, so did I for that matter. Rodney eventually started lifting his leg to go (and, yes, my BIL takes all the credit) and every time I see him go I laugh just a little!!! Tanner will lift his leg when the mood strikes all the rest of the time he squats or walks and makes a big mess. Leo still just squats but he is only 8 months old. I probably should call my BIL and see if he will come over and "train" Leo to lift his leg, huh??!!! LOL.

It also depends on how bad he has to relieve himself too. If he has to go really bad, he'll race out and find the closest patch of grass and squat.

The same with Micah. If he has to go really bad, he'll just squat. If not, he'll pee on everything he passes. A drop or two. I think it's to keep the other male dogs in the neighborhood from coming around his queen. (Shayna).

But he also gets tired of holding his leg up. After a couple of seconds, he drops it down. It also always looks like he never gets where he aims. Like whatever bush he's smelling, when he actually gets around to lifting his leg, he's 2-3 feet away and peeing on the grass. Crazy dog.
