I was just curious as to when I should expect Bugzy to start lifting his leg to pee like a real MAN? He's six months now and still squats like a girl. Do they really have to be around another male to show them how or is that just a myth? He looks so big and beefy and then he squats to pee. It just seems weird. TIA for any info. Heather

No...they do not have to be around other male dogs to learn how to "lift like a man."
I promise you...I went through the same thing with Sirus. I was afraid that he would pee like a sissy for the rest of his life and get made fun of by the other male doggies...and like you...I figured...maybe it's the lack of having a male "role-model". But sure enough...one day...he did it! He was about a year old when he started finally "lifting like a man!"

Max was about a year old before he lifted his leg. He still squats and pees when he goes out in the backyard. He seems to lift his leg when we walk him. Its easier if they don't lift their leg when you walk because when they do they will stop at every tree and lift even if nothing comes out.

Cosworth is 6 months and lifts his leg, rather enthuesiasticly, but ONLY when he's peeing on something. When he just goes in the yard he still squats. So does my neighbor's boxer, who is 3 years old I think.

Nobody makes fun of Coz...

Ronin just turned 16 months. He's never lifted his leg or squatted either. He does this kind of fake "stack" where he holds his front legs straight and kicks his back legs out behind him. Sometimes he'll lean his body to mark something, but he doesn't actually lift a leg off the ground  Silly, silly dog :)

Ronin1-
That's exactly what Bugzy does. I said squat because he doesn't lift his leg. It's just waht you described though and many times he ends up peeing on his leg. Thanks everyone... I still have hope for a manly dog.

Personally, I love it that my boys don't lift! One of them occasionally tries to do it on the patio cover pole and I hate it! YUK! Squatters welcome at this house!!! :D

I agree with Christine--yuk to lifting legs smashicon.

Skye (just under 1), stretches out to pee in the back yard. He just started lifting his leg while on walks. I hate it when dogs lift their legs on everything. He pretty much only does it here and there. His pee area in the back yard is a pea gravel area in front of the air conditioner. My mother always jokes that "when he starts lifting his leg, the whole house will smell" (very funny).

Anyway, there is no social stigma in this house for a male that prefers to squat.:D
