Laryngeal Paralysis/Collapsed Trachea Anyone?

Four o'clock and I am going to bed. I spoke with one of the vets at the hospital that we have been frequenting and she felt that the laryngeal paralysis is most likely the culprit here. Since Mugsy's larynx is "stuck" and it does not open or close, he sometimes "gaks", or clears his throat. Most likely the drink coupled with the strenuous walk to our room caused the unpleasant spasms and foam. He has finally laid his head down and seems to be a bit more comfortable. The plan now is to reset his digestive tract and do the bland thing for a day or two. Hopefully we will all sleep tomorrow.

Thanks Taryn and Layla. It's 12:30 and Mugsy is resting in the living room. He went out once, but has not had a BM yet. Perhaps there is nothing in the system to pass at this point. He has kept down the little bit of water I allowed him; hopefully the same will go for dinner later. I am staying in today so I can keep watch over him and Matt said he will stay home from work tomorrow if need be. What a night! I really hope I did not stress him out with all of my crying over the last few days and cause his belly turmoil! That will teach me to keep it together!

Hi Allison

Hope you're feeling a little better. I've only just read this thread today - so sorry to hear about Mugsy!! I hope he get's well soon!

I may have missed one of your postings but, did you manage to get in touch with any of the other owners of his brothers and sisters to find out if they had a similar problem?

Brando sends Mugsy a big slobbery kiss to make him feel better!!

Take care - Gemma xxx

Thanks for your concern, Gemma. That Brando is one handsome devil! We were only able to get in contact with one of the 8 littermates who were already friendly acquaintances. Their pup, also Mugsy, is recovering from a herniated disk that showed up around the same time our Mugs got sick. Unfortunately, our breeder was not on the up-and-up with them when they asked her if she had heard of any other littermates with medical problems. She told them that everyone was fine. Meanwhile, she had been to my home and saw Mugsy's condition! My husband did numerous searches on the web for postings or articles regarding puppies born on the same date in the town where we got Mugsy, but nothing. Both dogs' specialists have been in contact with one another and have been sharing info regarding the boys. It seems that there is no explanation for what Mugsy is going through.

The feelings you are experiancing are normal. Your whole family including Mugsy have been on a HUGE roller coaster ride these past five months. I think you are a very strong person and Mugsy is obviously a fighter, but we have our days when it seems like everything hits us hard and we get sad, upset, discouraged, etc. You are a remarkable person, it is so very clear to anyone who reads this thread how much your son means to you and Matt. So, if somes days you just want to cry, please let it out and don't feel guilty. After reading your last few posts, I just wanted to jump through the monitor and give you and Mugs a great big (((HUG))). I think it is so sweet Mugsy has a wagon now so he can still enjoy his walks with his family. Has he taken it for a spin yet? Does he like it?

Is Mugsy's belly feeling any better yet? Were you both able to get a good nights sleep?

I am praying you see some improvements with the accupunture. Let us know how it goes.

Mugs,
You hang in there buddy. All of us here at BW have grown to love you soooooo much, like you were one of our own. You have so many people on your side pulling for you. I hope you know you remain in my prayers and are always on my mind. (((HUGS))) to you sweetielovicon

Aww Carrie--HUG received and it felt great! Thanks sooo much. Mugsy suffered through most of the day, but by dinnertime he was happy to have some boiled chicken and rice. I have been rationing his water intake so we don't have anymore episodes. Ever since he was itty-bitty, he has been a drinker, so I never wanted to deprive him of water that he seemed to be needing. He is going to learn about moderation for a while.
His breathing is nice and slow now and he has been out for his last pee and poo. All systems seem to be functioning fine, although he is still drained from last night (who here isn't?). I think I will be comfortable with leaving him to go to work tomorrow. I was really freaked about leaving him in that condition. Even when circumstances were normal, I had frequent anxiety episodes when leaving the boys to go to work. My husband finds it crazy that I check plugs, the gas stove, the bottom of the dryer and the area surrounding the furnace more than once before leaving. I should probably be on some kind of drug for that! I used to be able to take the boys to my mother's house whenever I felt they needed supervision, but Mugsy can't deal with her hardwood floors and her new dogs climb the fence--something I do not want Shadow to learn about! Anyhow, we are hoping to have a peaceful night with some good REM sleep.

As for the wagon...it's so special, like a missing piece of our puzzle restored. Mugsy has been out in it twice and is pretty content to ride. Sometimes he seems like he would like to get out to explore, which I think I will let him try on a warmer day. As soon as I can, I am going to take a pic of it to post for all to see.

Have a great week everyone, and as always, thanks for your kind words, vibes, hugs and prayers. Honestly, I would be a looney without all of you!

Thanks for updating Allison--I'm glad Mugsy has settled for a while--I can relate to you worrying about leaving--My hubby too thinks that I am obsessive compulsive when I leave the house!!! Go get some good sleep and give a goodnite kiss to Mugs from all of us;)

Aahhh...everyone slept very well last night. I think I did 3 "Are you still breathing?" checks between 11 and 5:50. Not surprising though, I have always checked on the boys if I wake during the night and they are not in the room with us. Anyhow, the vibes worked and Mugsy was a much happier boy this morning. He was very happy and active when Matt got home and I was able to get some of his supplements in him at dinner time. What a scary weekend! I am so hypersensitive to everything that happens with my boy since his health declined. Thanks again for all of your concern. Hopefully I will have some more great news after our first acupuncture session next Monday.

One more thing! In October I received a PM that I just realized I had yesterday. A concerned member sent me a link from a company that makes braces for dogs and cats. I just ordered Mugsy a pair of leg braces to keep his paws under him the right way. Check 'em out at:

http://www.orthovet.com/

I should have them by week's end--will update soon.
