Thanks all. It's great to talk to you again. Unfortunately, the Prednisone has caused Mugsy to pee in the house 3 times. Two dog beds were officially retired to the garbage tonight. We are cutting the dosage in half and giving it a week. I was afraid that this would happen, as it has in the past when he was on steroids for something else as a pup. I knew that we would need to find a balance in order to successfully use the steroids. Hopefully a smaller dosage will provide some relief to his symptoms, and maybe when his bladder control in general improves, he will be able to handle more. I will keep you posted.

Happy Thursday all. Here's the latest...

Prednisone was definitely not the solution. I washed doggie beds all weekend (and my weekend started on Thursday). By Sunday I started putting bath mats with towels over them on the beds in hope that the urine would get caught in the rubber mat bottom and not soak through onto the fleece and into the stuffing. The accidents dwindled and we tried lower dosage, but after talking with our vet, it was decided that steroids were not the answer. They did seem to make Mugsy weaker and less mobile rather than show any signs of promise. Both the neurologist and the regular vet felt that the pred was not going to help, but we had to try. I just hope we didn't give up too soon for the medication to help. I did more supplement research and learned that the methylcobalamin form of B12 is the one that is needed by the brain and nervous system and that the cyanocobalamin B, which is the one most often found in the bottles we buy, does not really do what Mugsy needs it to do. After much interesting reading, I ordered some methylcobalamin (which only comes in losenges) and Mugsy started taking it yesterday. Already he has been much more ambulatory. He even came in the kitchen and ate dinner standing up! Mugs has not come into the kitchen in months. Of course, as his interest peaked, I had to lay rugs on the tile so he could come farther. I'm pretty sure that if I hac enough rugs he would have come all the way to the counter where I prepare their dinners.

I'm trying not to get too hopeful or excited, but it sure would be nice if these chewy cherry pills are the answer to our prayers. If they are, there's going to be one heck of a party in NJ and you're all invited!!!partyicon

Allison,

It's wonderful news to hear Mugsy walked into the kitchen and stood up to eat. I bet you were VERY happy to see that:D
Here's keeping our fingers, toes, and paws crossed that the chewy cherry pills are the answere to our prayers for Mugsy!!!!!

Thanks for the update, I always look for one;)

Thanks for the continued support everybody! I must add that although Mugsy is making more effort to get around, he is still walking pretty much on his knees. He's only been on the methyl for 3 days now, so hopefully each day will bring some improvement. Today has been a little stressful for him because we are finally having wall-to-wall carpet installed. We planned to put wood laminate flooring down over the summer, so we tore up all the old carpeting (still wondering if that is responsible for all of Mugsy's woes) in June. Unfortunately--or maybe a blessing in disguise--Matt broke his foot right after our vacation, and we have been walking on half-assed floor since! Mugsy cannot get any traction on tile or the hardwood, so now we have returned to carpeting. For the past 4 months we have had an area rug in the living room and strips of runner and berber in paths around the house so Mugs can get around. I have 4 guys banging around my house as I type. Mugsy is on a bed in the dining room where he can supervise and poor Shadow is in the yard because he would be pouncing all over the carpet and padding as the guys tried to install it! We are looking forward to a weekend of healing and soft, clean flooring. Have a good one guys!

Thank you Cindy. Every day I pray that we are closer to getting our miracle. For now, I am just so happy that he still wants to be with us. He has proven to be quite the fighter! Thank God he is as tough as he is stubborn!
