My boxers would have no clue what a dog house is or that they were expected to spent a moment in one let alone sleep in one.

I don't know how to answer the dog house question.

But, my pup would have no clue what a dog house is or isn't expected to spend a moment in one..... let alone sleep in one, as well.

I think when he seen one, he just left his mark on it.

Lily has a kennel outside, but it is only for daytime use when I am not home, and keep in mind that it is summer here and even in winter our temps are pretty mild. If it was that freezing here theres no way she would be outside. She would do what you said yours does, reach in with her back legs stretched and thats it. It took lots of treats and praise for her to go in and stay in.

Now for alternatives:
Have you thought about changing her food?
Have you tried boiled chicken and rice to calm her stomach?
Have you tried crating her at night? If she had diarrhea at night then she would have to do it in her crate, she couldnt sneak out and do it on the carpet.
Have you tried leaving her in the garage?
Even putting doggy diapers on her might help.

Banishing her outside should be a last resort thing, and even then if you cant find anything else to do, look harder. Especially in winter.

"Maybe it's the male/father in me, but I couldn't with any self-respect, utter the words "my Boxer's afraid of the dark" any more than I could say so about my 15 year old son. Must be a guy thing"

We would always walk Cleo in the morning before work. When daylight savings time happened in October it was dark when we walked. We can not walk her in the morning now. I thought she would get use to it but she would refuse to move. Now I walk her in the afternoon. She may look like a macho dog but she is just a big Momma's girl. I LOVE It!

I had a doghouse once, it was the insulated plastic IGLOO...warm in winter and cool in summer. The only reason I had one was for a place for Xena to go to in the winter if we were outside and she got cold and vice-versa in the summer (plus the doghouse was free..brand new!). Now, the summer time, she did in fact visit her house a few times on very hot days, to cool off. However, I did notice that she would ONLY go in it if one of us were outside with her. Other than that, the doghouse was nothing but a lawn ornament, and I eventually sold it.
IMO...boxers are very much people dogs and would rather be with them.. wherever. They are happiest and most content with their pack. :)

Stella is only out by her doghouse if I am shampooing carpets or waxing the floors. She views it as a toy and spends most of her time trying to flip it over. She has never actually slept in it...just jumped off it...flipped it...pushed it......

In talking about the outside thing with my wife--who's 8 months pregnant and tells me to focus on the children world right now--suggested that I contact Kona's breeder and mention the cyber hornet's nest I stirred up.

I did, and the breeder's comments are below:

It’s good to hear from you. Our vet feels dogs are healthiest when outdoors most of the time. And yes, ours are outdoors except when it is bitterly cold such as close to zero (and when we are home). I am glad your girl is doing well. If you ever get up to see Mt Rushmore please call an dwe would love to see her. Jan

While I shouldn't post the breeder's name and contact info, I certainly will invite them to share their knowledge and experience in the BW forum.

Maybe they should ask the vet to clarify his position. Perhaps he meant outdoor walks, running playing, exercising etc. and NOT LIVING outdoors. If he did mean LIVING outdoors then I would say it was time for a new vet! Obviously its better for a dog to spend lots of outdoor time exercising, but the northern states in the winter is not the time for a boxer (or any dog for that matter) to be "living" out there. I would also ask what the dog drinks in freezing tempuratures? I realize this was not your vet that said this, but it sounds to me as if the vet said one thing and they heard another.

It also states their dog is not outside "when we are home", which to me says the dog(s) are inside at night.

I am confused. I thought you "got it" towards the end of the thread that boxers do not belong outdoors - especially in Colorado in the winter. BUT this post makes me wonder if you seriously do understand? I don't think your breeder should be breeding at all - especially boxers - if that's the advice they take and offer. They obviously haven't researched the breed themselves and their vet sounds like an idiot. UNLESS they have heated kennels/barns/sheds/shelters for their boxers to keep the temps up and them out of the harsh winter, it sounds like boxer abuse to me. Sounds like they truley do not care for the breed and are only breeding for money. What dog is healthiest outdoors when they are shivering w/ barely any fur?? Any uneducated eye can see that they are NOT happy outdoors for long periods of time. Does this breeder solely breed boxers? Or are they confusing them with Husky's or some type of animal designed for the cold temperatures????

What is your take on the advice of your breeder and their vet?

Here is a link to the AKC website and the breed flier for a boxer - pay special attention the "caution" section on the 2nd page - we're not "making" this stuff up - maybe you should pass this along to your breeder: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/breeds/ClubFlierPDFs/AmericanBoxer.pdf

Raising a dog properly from puppyhood to adulthood is real good experience in figuring out the "child world". Most of what you have to do with puppies is the same as with kids ( ie potty training, up all night with a cranky newborn, discipline, teething issues, medical/health issues, the terrible twos, backtalk issues, the terrible teens) . Dogs just grow up faster.

Sounds like your breeder is in or around S. Dakota. Here's an excerpt from a/the Boxer rescue website located in Rapid City, South Dakota. Not sure if I can mention their name but you can search under their name if you want to see the entire site.

"If you plan to have a pet that is allowed to run free or live outdoors, please do NOT apply. We require fenced yards, and the dogs can not be off leash unless in a contained area. Boxers can NOT withstand the heat or cold and must be indoor family members. Dogs kept outdoors develop social and behavioral problems. Our dogs want to be your couch potato or foot rest.

Many of the dogs that come into rescue are walking skeletons because they have been kept outdoors. They burn off all their calories trying to stay warm. It's amazing to see the quality of coat they develop from good nutrition, plus how quickly they get to a healthy weight........
