Keeping a boxer puppy quiet....

Johann got neutered today. He's pretty quiet right now, thankfully. The vet said to do my best to keep him quiet for 2 weeks. Then told me good luck.

Any good ideas on keeping him quiet and calm, but not have him going stir crazy? He is crate trained....but he's only 4 months old and has just a tiny bit of energy.

Tiny bit of energy??? Dakota is 3 yrs and a massive bundle of energy.

I know they always say two weeks... but I don't know any dog, Boxer or other, that makes it past 2-3 days! We tried to crate Champ more during his first and second day home. We walked him (short walks) on the leash so he wouldn't run. By the third day, he started doing Boxer burns in the house. He usually only does those outside! We pretty much let him do what he wanted after that although I waited a few more days before I played fetch, etc., outside with him. Good luck!

The vet said 2 weeks is best, but to really aim for 1 week. Then she said with Johann to be happy with a few quiet days. Of course, she said this as he was jumping around, spinning in circles, and trying to get me to pick him up.

Glad to hear that he won't do too much damage running around after a few days. He's been sleeping since we got home (except for potty breaks and dinner).

2 weeks uh huh

Charlie was calm for two hours. Well laying still for two hours. He was relatively calm for four but he was up and mobile and stubborn about not wanting to lay back down again. Upon hearing this my hubby said well sure, if the last time you laid down and woke up pieces of your anatomy were missing, would you want to sleep again?! Charlie was pretty well up and ready to run the day after even with me staying completely still around him and no other dogs around him.

My little hound oh my god I dont think she even made the trip home calm. And with three dogs around she was urged to sit in the crate and be calm and she was very good about it all things considered.

I am telling you though when they say keep them calm I give them the "now you are a vet and you know this aint possible look" and they always chuckle and say well just dont let them get extremely rambunctious and I nod and smile.

When I brought Gus home after his nueter, he was running thru the house the minute we walked in the door. He healed fine.

I would just try to keep him as calm as possible. There is no way that you can keep him still for that long. Just make sure he doesn't run or jump for a while.

Rolen's neuter was a bit more invasive because he was cryptorchid. We stuck to the 10 days as best we could. We just made sure we took Rolen outside in the yard on a leash, so he wouldn't jump and break into boxer burns. He was so used to going out in the yard without a leash to do his business and explore, he got tired of having to be on a leash every time he needed to potty. We took a lot of little walks around the neighborhood during the healing time! Good Luck!

Clay kept himself calm (but then again hes the calmest of the 2) for about 2 days. After that he was raring to go! We simply tried to keep him off the stairs for 1-2 weeks. You could tell he limited himself. We just watched and didnt let the two play rough for 2 weeks. My vet told me the same thing "good luck".

Joey was neutered on wed. when i got him home that afternoon ALL he did was sleep. i gave him a little broth but he was just not interested in eating anything, but he sure made up for it in thursday. we tried to keep him calm but there just wasnt anything we could do. he did limit himself a little bit on the jumping but not as much as i would have liked. he has healed very well, today being sunday his small incision is hardly noticable.

I've never had a dog, boxer or other, male or female, that I could keep quiet after spay/neutering for any amount of time. None of them ever had any complications either. Like most of the others in their responses we just tried to keep the activity to a dull roar. Good luck.
