Just had a major scare

I work from home and was in my office when something just happened that really shook me up! I heard my dogs yelping and when I went in the other room to see what was going on, well, Lily's collar was caught in Daisy's mouth and it was choking poor Lily! I tried to unbuckle it, but they were moving around too much for me to get a good grip on it. In the mean time, Lily can't even breathe!!!!! Finally, Lily pulled the collar out of Daisy's mouth. They both seem okay, but very shaken (my screaming didn't help). Now they're having a nap.

I know some of you don't like the clip collars, but believe me, Lily will be wearing one from now on. If she had been wearing one, I could've gotten her free in a couple of seconds. Daisy always grabs Lily's collar to get her to play and I can't take the chance that it could happen again. My Lily could have died!!!!

Something like this never crossed my mind! If you have 2 who play like that, please be careful!!!

Do they really need to wear collars in the house? Rocks never has a collar on in the house. The only time his collar goes on is if we go outside for something. This way if they don't have collars on they can't get tangled.

Scary! I am glad they are both okay. My two also don't wear collars while in the house or the back yard, only when we go out for walks outside the yard or car rides. Maybe that is an option?

Many years ago I had a lab that wore a choke chain. One night he was out in the yard playing with the neighbors spaniel. I was in my office in the house working when I heard the most god awful rukus I've ever heard. Running outside I see that the spaniel had slid her paw under the choke chain while playing, and had flipped over the top of my dog trapping them both. My dog was choking to death and the neighbor dog was yelping and squealing because of the paw being caught and twisted in the chain.

My dog was tearing around trying to free himself and the spaniel was being drug around while trying to bite my dog. The only way to get them stopped was to reach in and grab hold. As I was trying to stop them the spaniel bit my hand 7-8 times. She was terrified and hurting and that was the only response she knew. I screamed for the neighbor to bring me some wire cutters and I was able to cut the chain to free them. They both recovered well Fifteen years later I still have deep puncture scars on my hand from the bites, and a deep appreciation for the clip collars when she has to wear one.

The reason I leave my girls' collars on is because they are in and out all day, since the majority of the time, I'm in my home office working. I'm afraid one of them will realize they can get over the fence and then they would be lost without any ID.

But I will take your advice and leave them off both girls while inside. They will just have to learn how to sit and wait for their collars to be put back on if they want to go outside.

Joe, how awful!!!! You were very fortunate to have a neighbor who had cutters and could even find them so quickly! And bless you for being more concerned for the dogs than your own safety.

I heard a story at the dog park here...

A dog grab another dog by the choke chain, and his teeth got stuck. The dog with the choke chain was choking, and the other one had a broken jaw... The people tried to help them, but with no tools to cut the choke, the dog choke to death and the other perished later of his injuries. :(

Believe me, now, my two don't have anything else than clip collar or harness!

I had that very same thing happen to two of my Dals once. Freaked me out. I did have the clip collar on, thank dog, otherwise I would never have been able to free them. My youngests bottom jaw was caught in the collar of my older one and the collar twisted. The baby was yelping in pain, which really scared the older one who just wanted to run away. It was just awful. But, living here in California, earthquake territory, I keep collars on my dogs at all times, whether inside or out. I saw the horror during the Northridge earthquake with so many dogs that had jumped through windows from fear and since they didn't have tags on, the owners couldn't find them. It was a nightmare, so ever since then, I make sure everyones ID'd.

Holy Moley, they do take yrs off our life worrying about them huh? We have buckle collars, but will be going to town to get the other kind now!

How scary - we use the clip collars - easy to get off if you need to. Only use the choke collars if we are walking. We've never owned a buckle collar - I always thought they'd be too hard to get on and off - glad we don't have one now.

Anyway, glad everything turned out OK.
