Hi all!

I'm going through an insanely stressful decision at this point in my career! I need your advice (as a what would you do scenario?!) !
When taking on my current position, my goal was to move into a service coordinator position (being that I have the degree and experience). I've worked in my current position as a vocational instructor for a year now. I love my job. However, my goal was to be a service coordinator for individuals iwth developmental disabilities(which is at least $3-$5 an hour more in pay than I make now) In my area... it's a substantial difference. As it's been my goal... I've bid on the position every time it's come up! All of a sudden, yesterday morning, I went to work and was informed an MSC was leaving and a position would be open. Before I even bid on the position, I received a call from the dept. director asking if I was still interested; and asking if I could interview. I interviewed that day... and did well (from what I hear).
However, the next day... a lot of the current SC's who've been talking me into bidding, started telliing me these horror stories (and I mean Horror stories) about the team leader I'll be working under. Not to mention... I hear how over-worked, stressed, and busy all these SC's are. They are miserable! The question that was posed to me by a good friend of mine who is an SC is: "Is all this crap worth the extra money???" My answer right now (of course, before accepting.... is "yes". Because the ultimate goal of the DH and I is to buy the dream property!) I just keep hearing stories of how much the postion entails, how many crazy hours people work per week, how much of a "blame game" goes on half of the time, and how much trouble you can get in if you miss one little thing! !!!! My position, currently, is a hot commodity as well due to the fact that it gives the experience. Plus we have a good team... However, It's a lot less $$$. I fear, if I turn down the position at this time, they might not ask me again. However, I don't want to be unhappy at work either. What would you do in my position??!!!!! I've heard: "do what makes you happy!" However, I'm not sure what would right now. It would make me happy... to continue to do well in this field.. However, which way is most beneficial to me and my family! I want to make this move... but I don't want to be unhappy!

Personally, I would take the job and form my own opinions about the position and my boss. I wouldn't worry so much about what other people think or gossip about-they're probably just jealous! ;) Besides, if you don't take it, you'll always wonder, "what if . . . "

I would take the job and decide for yourself if it really is what your hearing. If your job eventually gets pretty bad and stressful, you can always look around other places in that same position. Since you would have the experience now!!!!

Congragulations and good luck!!! Make sure you keep us informed on your new job

I agree with everyone else. Take the position, keep your nose clean, don't buy into the gossiping, stay somewhat solitary, yet friendly, and work towards YOUR goal. The worse case scenario is that you take it, take a long while to come to hate it, make the bucks you want, get this next level of experience and if the time comes to move on, then you know at least you met the goal and you now have the experience. Good luck and remember we are here for you.:)

I say go for it. Like everyone else said, if you don't, you may regret it. And hey, you could be able to offer something to this new team that they are lacking, and could help things to work more efficiently. Sometimes all it takes is one new person with good ideas and a fresh perspective to change things. Good luck!

I agree...don't go by gossip, go by your instinct. Did you interview with the person that would be your boss? Did you get any bad vibes from him/her? Did they mention any of these stressors that other people are talking about?
Even if certain aspects of the job are stressful, if it is something that you truly want to do then that can help energize you where it might bring someone else down. My job involves a lot of 'baptism by fire' and figuring things out on your own. It is frustrating, but extremely rewarding when you succeed. For me that is worth it; I would be unhappy in a predictable routine job. For others it would be a nightmare.

So I would advise to take the job and make your own decisions.

I have to say I agree with everyone else. Just because one or two other people may have had a bad experience under this team lead doesn't mean you would too. If it were me I would take it and form my own opinions about the situation. Especially if you go into it with the intention to make the absolute most of the opportunity. It sounds like a fantastic chance, and like others have said before me, you wouldn't want to wonder "what if" after this if you turned it down. Just my two cents' worth. Good luck and let us know what you decide! :)

Take it - build new skills while making more money and contribute more to your dream. You don't want them to think you aren't interested in other opportunities....which you are. Good luck!
