Took Jackson to get his Holter device today, but did not come with either. He had another fainting spell while at the cardiologists office. Suprisingly, hte doctor checked his heart afterwards and it was Slow. Initially we thought that he had Boxer CM, but now after this who knows. He is staying overnight at the hospital for further monitoring. He has another major issue, his thyroid may possibly be low. He is suffering from many of the symptons, hair loss, fatigue, coldness, weight gain. I have read that thyroid issues may even cause faintings or collapses. I wrote two other post, "fainting", and "Boxer Cardiomyopathy". If anyone has any stories or advice about dogs with slow heart hates who have been collapsing please drop a note.

I am sure you miss your baby but maybe it is for the best that he had the spell while with the cardiologist so they can see exaclty what is going on. Hopefully you will be lucky and the only thing wrong will be the thyroid problems...Hopefully. Once you find out and know how to help him you will feel so much better. Good luck and sending {{{wiggles & kisses}}}

How old is Jackson? Sammy was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. She had weight gain, coldness, fatigue and a slow heart rate. She would shake sometimes, but wouldn't pass out. My vet thinks she has had it for a while, (maybe since adolesence, because of some behavior issues that presented at that time). Since she has been on meds she is a different dog, alert, full of energy, thick coat, weight loss (she is able to keep up with Duke). I hope they find out what's wrong. Hopefully it will be thyroid (easily treated and normal life expectancy). Good luck, keep us posted.

I would rather my baby have a thyroid condition over a heart condition anyday. Sometimes finding the problem is much harder than fixing it. Paws crossed for you

Jackson update

Jackson's thyroid tests can back very low, so he is now on meds. We have not got back the results from the Holter device. He has fainted/stumbled a couple times but it is really strange, it only happens after he has been sleeping for a long time. Anyone know how long the meds will take to kick in?

Your vet can tell you since different meds take different times to build up in the system. I would expect to see results in a day or two...may take longer to get to a maintained level though....at least you've got a diagnosis to work with now.

I saw a difference in Sammy in a couple of days. I'm still seeing different things as her metabolism was really slow. She has been on meds for two and a half months and is like the puppy she once was.

Back Again

Well Jackson had a couple fainting spells again this morning and right now he is back in the hospital. He not only is being treated for some kind of heart condition as well as his hypothyroidism. On top of that his red blood count is low (25) and has been deemed anemic, all he does is sleep. However, they can't seem to find out what is causing the anemia, we may have to do a bone marrow test (although we are trying alternatives). Here's the short sroty again:
Almost 2 weeks ago Jackson collapsed in the middle of the night and since then he has had nearly ten episodes. His spells are all the same. They only happen after he has awakened or if he is resting. He wakes up and then within a couple minutes mildly collapses and then is fine again. He has had almost every test I can think of but no real diagnosis.

So we are just waiting to see how he makes it through the night and will be able to check in the doctor tomorrow morning. We just want him to be comfortable and do everything we can possible to save him.
