Issues with puppy....

So my newest foster is a 6 week old boxer/pit mix (I think) and he's so stinkin cute - I had to take him out of the shelter. I knew it would be challenging given his age and the fact he's been seperated from his mom way too young. Rocky has been doing a good job of teahing bite inhibition, etc although he still nips and what not- sometimes snaps at the face/ear, etc. - to me these are all puppy behaviors that we correct - and hope one day it gets better. I have a few questions for you regarding other issues that Arthur is having:

1. Sleeping at night --> He's kept in a puppy pen all day when we are gone for work. We go home at lunch to let him out - he's got a bed, water/food, piddle pad, toys in there. He has one of my shirts too as I thought it might comfort him - the smell. He piddles ONLY on the piddle pad so that is awesome. When we get home for work he's crazy hyper and plays and plays all night with Rocky. When they both finally lay down - I'll snuggle with Arthur for a bit then put him in his pen. He'll sleep for 2 hours - then wake up screaming bloody murder for HOURS. I've tried waiting it out. I've tried a small crate in our bedroom - nothing helps. I don't know what else to do with him - he's obviously too young to be OUT of the crate or in bed with us - especially due to issue number 2 (see below)

2. Potty training --> Alright, I admit it. I was spoiled with Rocky. 2 accidents. The dog just GOT it. Arthur - NOT so much. He goes outside when we are out there- but he literally pees EVERY 10 minutes - little dribbles all over my carpet. It's random - like why can't he hold it and go outside ?! We obviously reward, throw a mini party, etc. when he potties outside. He has never had a poop accident in the house. He actually has started to learn to go by the door and hit the bells or bark when he has to go outside to poop. So he's good about controlling that, but not the urine.

Any suggestions about potty training or sleeping at night? I'm so so tired - it's been 8 nights and I was hoping it would get better. I love fostering and I love Arthur with his beautiful green/blue/grey eyes - but he's starting to drive me crazy!

Thanks :)

probably should have put this in the training area, not behavioral issues - please feel free to move it mod - sorry :(

Issue #1--Could you place a heated pad (one of the ones with barley hulls or rice that you microwave) or a hot water bottle in with him. It will mimic the warmth of mom or littermates and may provide the comfort he needs to settle back down.

Issue #2--You need to take him out every 10 minutes. You mentioned that he dribbles all over the carpet and that he also sometimes goes to the door to ring the bells on his own. In all honesty, he shouldn't be given the opportunity to do anything on his own. Young pups (especially as young as he is) should be in the crate, contained in a small pen, or tethered to you AT ALL TIMES. Even if he wanted to hold his urine, he can't--he's too young.

Yea, you are right. He's just a baby. He loves to play with Rocky and climb on him and they actaully play very well together considering the 70# difference - and I need Rocky to help with teaching him bite inhibition, etc. - since he doesn't have a mom or any littermates - so I don't want to isolate him ALL the time - but I know what you are saying.

He really only has one room in the house - he doesnt run everywhere - it is gated off so he's just in the family room - when we are in there watching TV or whatever - that's when they play in the evenings.

I thought maybe because all day while he's in his pen he sleeps - like he has toys, etc. in there but he never engages with them when we are gone. So could it be his day/nights are mixed up?

I will for sure try the hot water bottle thing tonight.

Thanks!

I wondered the same thing about Daisy with the "pee dribbles"... She is now 12 1/2 weeks old, and just in the last few days has started developing control over her urination. She now will wait until I let her and Cole outside, at which point she will immediately go pee in the yard. :) Haven't had a pee accident in a couple of days now! (Knock on wood...)

I only wish I could say the same for poops :( haha

Cuteness alert - the "kids" are playing tug with a plush smiling asparagus... Must go find camera!

issue #1: have you tried covering the crate with a blanket?

issue #2: maybe he is just too young to control it just quite yet... ;)

my issue: I want to see pictures!!!!!! lovicon

He's not in a crate - he's in a puppy pen - so it would be REALLY hard to cover it cuz it's kind of big...you know what I mean?

I have a hard time finding that he doens't have control because he runs away before/as he is doing it. so he knows not to do it RIGHT in front of me - but thinks its okay to do it in the 'dark'. I've tried picking him up and taking him out and what not - but every 10 minutes will be hard. I'll do whatever I can to help prep this boy for his new home. He's adorable and deserves a good home.

Here's a video of him and Rocky playing. I honestly think he's gotta be closer to 6-7 weeks now. They told me 4 when i picked him up last week - 8 days ago. I doubt he is 4 weeks. All his teeth are in, he's coordinated, he barks, he's about 8#.

Wonderful little puppy!!!

first off, congrats on the new addition, he looks adorable!!! :D
for what its worth i have the same issues with Dood and Lily, both 8 week old boxer pups, i have noticed over the last 2 days that theyve been improving slowly just through consistency in the way we deal with things....
#1 when we put them to sleep at night, they will cry about it so i sit there with one hand in each crate just talking to them til they nod off. If they start barking then i go and reassure them, if the barking continues i let them out but no matter how much they cry and moan we keep them in their bed at night.

#2 with potty training we take them out after theyve woke up from naps, had a little play, ate recently or start sniffing about. in 5 days we havent had one poo in the house yet. the weeing is ok, they pee outside about %70 of the time but then occasionaly without warning will just 'go' wherever they are. when they have peed, we clean it up and put a bit of white vinegar down to remove their 'marker' from that area.

I have felt frustrated at times when they seem to ignore/forget everything theyve learned so far but in all honesty, it is coming together slowly and they are getting better.
I think consistency is the key to teaching him these things :)

good luck with the training and i hope he picks it up soon

oh my gosh, he is SO cute.

I love the idea of heating a corn/rice/bean bag and sticking it in with him at night. We did this with a corn bag for Kona and it seemed to work. We had to move her to a crate right next to the bed. When she cried, I stuck my fingers through the crate for her to lick. No words, just a little phycial reassurance that I was still there and back to sleep.

Has a vet checked out Arthur for any issues? If he's literally peeing every 10 minutes, something could be wrong. We had to take Kona out after play, after eating, after drinking, after sleeping....it felt like all we did was take her out. We ended up having to really watch how much water she got (camel puppy would tank up and pee and pee and pee). Not sure about the dribbles.

Good luck and kudos to you for your big heart for fotering him!
