Is my boxer dumb?

I have a 4 month old boxer. She is a great dog except for the fact that she pisses everywhere and craps everywhere. I can take her out, she will go, and a hour later she will piss right in front of me and she runs off cause she knows she did something wrong. I have about lost my patience with this animal. I have had other dogs that were house-broken by this time. Is she dumb? What can I do?

No, she is not dumb. She's a puppy! Just like with children, so learn faster than others, and some can hold their bladder/bowels better an earlier age while others take longer. I think you need to recognize that puppies require a lot of patience, and that if training isn't going well, it's either that she's just slower to mature enough physically or perhaps you aren't training her properly. It's not because she is dumb.

There is very handy search feature in the upper right corner of the page. Try searching house breaking/house training and you'll find some good tips from previous posters on this subject.

Patience, patience, patience. And be consistent about showing your puppy where you want her to go. And females can take longer to housebreak than males. My female hound was pooping on the carpet for months every now and then. She took forever to learn.

After an accident, do you always take her to the same place in your yard and use the same command?

Do you do the same (take her out and give the command) every hour or so during the day and right after eating?

Do you notice the signs that she might be needing to go - sniffing, etc., and take her out right then and there?

Are you away for long periods of time during the day - this will cause her to have a longer learning curve, believe me, I speak from experience.

Don't lose your patience - she isn't a human and doesn't think like a human. She only wants to please you, but YOU need to show her (REPEATEDLY and CONSISTENTLY) what you want her to do.

And four months old is still very young. Even though she may know what she is supposed to do, her bladder is very small and can't be held for a long period of time.

BTW, yelling, and god forbid, hitting or rubbing their nose in "it" DOES NOT help at all.

Good luck! It is trying, I know, but she will learn.

And I highly recommend FOLEX carpet spot remover :)

Usually by the time they reach 6 months they are potty trained.
I don't know when you feed your pup but, mine always go out right after eating and usually do their business.
I would suggest not leaving food/water out all the time for her.
Do give her water but, she doesn't need to have access to it all the time..at least while your training her.
I found that my boxers were the easiest to potty train of any dog I've every owned. They are very smart and very silly but, by no means "dumb". That's their personality to act silly and be goofy.
Please do searches here about potty training and other things about boxers. I'm sure it will be helpful to you and you will learn a lot more about boxers.

My puppy is bout four months as well and is fully housetrained. That said, I do not trust him at all and am dilligent in taking him out after every meal, which is at least 2-3 times per day. Around meal time he will go out every 20-30 miins so I know he is good and drained! If we can not have him by our side, we crate him. He has only had two accidents in the house and that was almost two months ago.

However, of late he has urinated in his crate. I think that is my fault as he has been in just over 6 hours and I became complacent with his longevity in the crate. Anybody know what that is? I usually try to be away (at work or play) for no more than 6 hours. If I am working late, I come home in the middle of the day to get him out...I work 30 miles from home so it is a hike, but keeps him happy.

All in all, he has been very eay to train. he goes to the door at home and waits when he has to go. We never make him wait long so we have to vigillant in our monitoring. We may try the bell trick soon.

Six hours is a long time for a four month old to hold it. The rule of thumb is one hour for every month of age. Also, you want to watch and make sure he doesn't develop a bladder infection; signs of that are excessive urination attempts but little comes out.

Four months is still very young for your little girl. I have had a lot of dogs in my life and Mason is my first boxer. He took FOREVER to finally stop having accidents in the house. I was so frustrated. Every time I thought we had it he would go and have another accident. He was at least 10 months before he was pretty good about having accidents in the house. But now at 3 1/2 I wouldn't trade him for the world! :) He has made me a boxer convert!

I read about the UTI in this thread. Mason has had two in the last few months. You might want to look into that as well since it is much more common for a female than a male.

Try to keep her on a schedule until she is able to hold it. Most pups need to go out frequently and I have read that dogs are creatures of habit so routines are good.

Dallas, Don't give up. My puppy is exactly four months old today and just in the last week she has been going to the slider and asking to go out everytime.

Just two weeks ago, I thought I was going to lose my mind but then all of a sudden she GOT IT!

It's a relief but I still don't trust her. I watch her every move.

Hang in there..............it's almost over!

Do a search here for "bell training"--I swear--you will be amazed how quickly they catch on--Layla rang the bell by herself at 10 weeks of age just one day after I started training her!! It also takes the guess work of having to watch them all the time for signals!

Good luck!
