Is Hibiscus toxic?

I have done a search and found hibiscus on both the toxic and non-toxic plant lists. The list I usually go by (ASPCA) doesn't have it on either list. I bought several hibiscus plants and was going to start a backyard garden. Vixen "seems" to have gotten past her digging up of stuff, but I didn't want to put her in danger. Does anyone know for sure?

Weeellll, I don't know about for dogs in particular (but I would assume that it would be the same), but I actually FEED hibiscus to my African Spur Thigh tortoise (and have for years-with the herpetoligist's ok). The hibiscus is a member of the mallow family, and to my knowledge that is a non-toxic group....OK, I just looked in my book Edible Flowers and hibiscus is listed in it (it is often used in salads and for teas), so I think you're safe. Hope this helped

Thanks for your response. Actually when I did the search, I saw a lot of recommendations for hibiscus use in feeding reptiles. I guess I am frustrated that one link on my search has it on the non-toxic list, the next says it causes diarrhea and vomiting of blood if eaten by a dog, etc. etc. Not sure if the vet would be on the up and up on this, as it seems the internet can't decide one way or the other.
